Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Young actor recovering after collapsing during Montford Park Players show

Here’s more of what’s going around, including an update on the collapse of a young actor at last weekend’s performance of “Robin Hood” by the Montford Park Players. Here we go!

-A 17-year-old is recovering after she collapsed during a weekend performance of “Robin Hood” by the Montford Park Players. She’s been transferred to Duke Medical Center, and her family has launched a crowdfunding campaign. At least one bystander leapt to the assistance of the teen-ager and began administering CPR before firefighters arrived. All-together, it was a heroic effort by everyone to care for the young person.

-Asheville police are still searching for clues in the recent shooting death of a 12-year-old boy at the Lee Walker Heights public housing complex.

-A man drowned in the French Broad River on Tuesday after a valiant rescue attempt by a couple of patrons of the Salvage Station, WYFF reports.

-Asheville-based graphic novelist Hope Larson talks about the history and politics of comics and graphic novelists with Margaret Simon, assistant professor of English at North Carolina State University, in this WUNC public radio interview.

The Asheville Area Arts Council has put out a call to artists for a project at the 55 South Market condos project. Here’s a taste: “A unique artistic creation to be “installed” on the exterior wall of 55 South Market Condominiums in Asheville NC. Concrete wall space 14ft wide by 6ft tall, 2 inches deep on Beaumont St side.”

-In another call to artists, the Asheville Downtown Association is looking for an artist to create a mural for the stairwell connecting Battery Park Avenue and Wall Street.

-A new YA novel by Asheville author Megan Shepherd called Grim Lovelies is getting solid reviews. (Kirkus Reviews)

-If you’re interested in the Vanderbilt family, a new book out this fall titled A Well-Behaved Woman: A Novel of the Vanderbilts by Therese Anne Fowler follows Alva Smith, who married George Vanderbilt’s (he of the Biltmore House fame here in Asheville) older brother. Alva went on to be a leader of the U.S. suffrage movement. Here’s the Amazon book description.

-Black Mountain Brewing is opening soon, reports the Black Mountain News.

-Speaking of breweries, the following Asheville breweries are celebrating anniversaries: Archetype Brewing, 1 year; Hi-Wire Brewing, 5 years; and Wedge Brewing, 10 years. That’s a cool snapshot of the development of the local craft beer scene.
