Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Wicked Weed brew wins gold; demolition set for old downtown deck; more

Here’s some of what’s going around:

-Asheville’s “mini” Biltmore Estate is for sale. Beverly-Hanks has it here. It’s a massive private home, asking price $10.7 million.

-Something’s definitely up at the old Barbecue Inn on Patton Avenue in West Asheville. There’s fresh brown paper up in all the windows. Word on the street is a new restaurant could be open in that location in the next few months.

-A new magic store coming to 108 Lexington Ave., next to the Static Age Records on one side and the former Blend gallery on the other.

-There’s an online voting competition happening to see which independent bookstore will get to host author Malcolm Gladwell. Malaprop’s wants you to vote here.

-The Mountain Oasis music fest is really celebrating the Asheville beer scene this year. Check out the Mountain Oasis Craft Beer Experience.

–Demolition of the old parking deck and former Flying Frog restaurant on Haywood Street in downtown is scheduled for February, according to the Asheville Downtown Association. A demolition permit is in the works now.

–Wicked Weed won a gold medal last week at the Great American Beer Festival, a huge honor and a first for an Asheville brewery. Localbeerblog has a great write-up about the honor. Congratulations to Wicked Weed! They brewery, which isn’t even a year old yet, has been doing a great job.

-The folks who live on Vermont Avenue in West Asheville are planning to close the street to traffic for Halloween. The street has been a super popular spot for trick-or-treaters for years. Now they’re kicking it up a notch. They need help to raise $350 to close the street, put up some signs and create a candy bank. Email westashevillewatch@gmail.com to give $$$ or volunteer.

-The “Bring Costco to Asheville” page on Facebook has some interesting, albeit contradictory, information. One commenter says Costco is actively looking at property along Airport Road. Others say Costco has no plans to open anytime soon. I’ll have to keep an eye on this one.
