Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Roots Cafe is back; so is grueling Shut-In Trail race; enter The Dog Door; wintry weather arrives; and much more

Because it’s been awhile. And it’s Thursday, the official start of the weekend. And there’s so much going on in Ashvegas.

-This week in music: Nikki Talley CD release on Friday.  Jar-e CD release on Saturday at the LAB. Dehlia Low CD release at the Get Down. This town sure does rock.

-Give a dog a bone: The Dog Door, a dog training center, has opened on Broadway in downtown Asheville. The store has eco-friendly doggie supplies and it will serve as a training and resource center for dogs and their people.

-B-Boys compete: From Mountain Xpress:

Breakdancer Michael “Frantic” Pelletier of Columbia, S.C., and Joseph Adams, of Asheville’s own Hunab Kru (a b-boy/b-girl collective), have a vision to establish a high-energy, all-inclusive break-dancing scene in Asheville. That vision takes flight at the upcoming Southeast B-Boy Championships, slated for Saturday, Nov. 6 at the YMI Cultural Center in downtown Asheville. Pelletier, who is sponsoring the event (and literally sold his boat for the money to “make it happen”), hopes that the tournament will set the stage for a quality battle unlike anything the area has encountered before. At the upcoming championships, Pelletier and Adams hope to establish a positive environment for dancers to compete, and for spectators to experience “the physical manifestation of hip-hop culture.”

-Cold Mountain roll-out: Highland Brewing’s lovely Cold Mountain Winter Ale arrives in 1-liter flip-top bottles at Bruisin’ Ales today, according to Julie on Facebook. It’s also now on tap at the Thirsty Monk and Scully’s, according to Twitter peeps, including @zackmassey. It will be in stores in next couple of weeks. The official release party is next weekend at Highland Brewing.

-November pain: The Blue Ridge Roller Girls get down on Saturday. Nice.

-Roots Cafe returns: Roots Cafe – the actual cafe, returns today. This time it’s located in the Grey Eagle. (Roots used to be in its own stand-alone location down on River Road.) I sure do love their biscuits.

-Wintry weather: Ray’s Weather says the high temp. on Saturday is going to be 38 degrees. And there might be some snow flakes flying around. Damn.

Shut-In: Asheville peeps love running hard-ass races. The Shut-In Trail Run is about as hard-ass as they come – 18 miles up an effing mountain. It happens Saturday.

-Moogfest thought of the day: I still can’t get over how all of Haywood Street smelled of pot during Moogfest 2010. I’m not talking about indoor venues. I’m talking about outside, in the open. The Blue Banner has its recap of the fest here. The Winston-Salem Journalhas a Moogfest report here. And welovedc.com has Moogfest 2010 coverage here and here.

-Freaks come out: The 2011 Freaks of Asheville calendar is out now at Malaprop’s and Downtown Books and News. Amazing photography by Michael Traister. Good juice for Arts 2 People. Pick one up.

-On the AVL social/fundraising scene: Tonight is the Asheville Affiliates’ fundraiser at Highland Brewing; the big Doors of Asheville fundraiser is Friday, featuring great local art up for grabs, at The Venue; and Cheers for Charity is an autism fund-raiser on Saturday, held atop the Hotel Indigo.

-Coming next week: We head deep into November, with Thanksgiving right around the corner. But before that, there’s Prom! The Taste of Asheville. The Superhero 5K. The Sound Swap. Much more.

What else?
