Ashvegas Hot Sheet: New paranormal group in Asheville

Some of what’s going around:

-Navitat Knoxville: It looks like the Barnardsville-based Navitat Canopy Adventures may be expanding to Knoxville, thought that’s unconfirmed at this point. There’s a knew Navitat Knoxville LLC. I left a message with the company’s PR person on Thursday and will update when I hear back.

-Frankel leaves Mountain Xpress: Jake Frankel, a reporter for the alt news weekly Mountain Xpress, is departing after five years to work in nonprofit land. From the announcement:

After a five-year run at Xpress, Jake Frankel will be leaving soon to accept a position as executive editor of The Prem Rawat Foundation, a project-based nonprofit helping to bring food, water and peace to people around the world. He says he’s excited to be able to put his journalism skills to use — not to mention getting the chance to help people in far-flung places. …

In his new role at The Prem Rawat Foundation, Frankel will help spread the word about the nonprofit’s humanitarian and peace-education programs, which stretch from the Americas and Europe to Africa and India.

-Keever elected head of N.C. Democratic Party: The Raleigh News & Observer reported Saturday night that Pasty Keever, a former Buncombe County Commissioner and former N.C. House member, was elected chairwoman of the N.C. Democratic Party. She said her priorities would be to be Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Sen. Richard Burr in 2016, and support her party’s pick for president.

-New paranormal group in town: Looks like it’s a group comprised of medical professionals. Interesting. Here’s the ad in the Mountain Xpress:

Call Nurses+ Investigative Paranormal Society. We will help you if we can for free. Researching and investigating since 2013. All medical professional team. 828-290-5821.

-Tasty Beverage gets moving: Tasty Beverage, the Raleigh-based beer store that announced last fall that it planned to open an Asheville store in the Chrysler Building on the South Slope, is moving on those plans. From Tasty Beverage on FB:

While it may not look like much now, people will be sitting around this bar celebrating beer and life in the near future, and we can’t wait.
One day at a time, this beautiful space is becoming the beer store of our dreams.
Thanks for your support along the way. We can’t wait to have so many good times and awesome beers with you!

-Word on the street: Brian Postelle, a public information and social media specialist for the city of Asheville, is leaving the post. Postelle worked as a reporter for the Mountain Xpress before taking the city job.

-Concerts on the Quad: The music series is returning to UNC Asheville after a five-year hiatus. Asheville-based Sirius. B will open the series with a June 15 show.

-Atomic Furnishing and Design moving: The furniture store announced on its FB page that it’s moving from Woodfin to a spot on Patton Avenue later this month. Atomic Furnishing will share space with TC’s Retro Rentals, which rents vintage trailers for weddings and special events.

-New look for Bold Life: Editor Melanie McGee Bianchi announces a new look for the monthly Bold Life publication around town:

For any readers (especially Hendersonville- and Brevard-based readers) who may have wondered why Bold Life Magazine didn’t drop a February issue … we’re retooling the format and relaunching in March with a new look. No more newsprint, y’all! … it’s going to be stock paper, saddle stitching, and a magazine-y flair. Still the same arts & culture slant, but based solely in the south-of-Asheville region, with more food coverage & more performance-art content. Fancy stuff.

-New food publication: Jerry Johnson, publisher of The Laurel of Asheville, announces the launch of a new food magazine for Asheville and the surrounding region:

The Laurel of Asheville is gaining a cousin. Publisher Jerry Johnson is excited to announce the launch of a new magazine devoted to farm-to-table living in our mountains and foothills.

Called Plough to Pantry, this regional publication is something he’s been considering for a while. “People kept asking me to publish a locally-produced food magazine. The success of The Laurel convinced me that we could do it. I just had to wait for the right time,” he says. That time is now. The first issue is scheduled for publication in late winter.

The four-color quarterly magazine will feature articles on local food and farms, restaurateurs, brewers, distillers, and fermenters, as well as the local retailers where their products can be found.

The Arc of Buncombe County 5k March/Run/Walk: A race benefit for the Arc of Buncombe County is set for March 7. Organizers are offering a package for participants to pay $30 to register and get a Southern Conference basketball tournament ticket. (The SoCon event is the same day.)

-Kickoff party: From the announcement:

It’s the {Re}HAPPENING Kickoff Party, and it will take place on February 11 from 5:30-7:30 pm at The Mothlight in West Asheville. {Re}HAPPENING artists, organizers, supporters, and sponsors are invited to this event, which will be a great chance to meet the artists and learn more about this year’s art projects. It should be a lot of fun.

“Paranormal Group(s) in Asheville” seems redundant, kinda like saying “heat that is hot”. Most groups in Asheville are paranormal. That is why they are in Asheville.

And who wants to be a member of a group whose acronym is N.I.P.S. ? Sounds like another topless rally.

The straight poop: Brian Postelle was too non-partisan for government work. I hope he can get a real job without being hampered by ostracism.

You’re insane.

Barry Summers February 8, 2015 - 11:15 am

Given Typhoid Tom’s recent disdain for handwashing, I would have thought that GOPers would avoid using words like “poop” in political discussions…

You’re such an incompetent, partisan hack Summers. How many hands do you think have been washed due to a government mandated sign?

Barry Summers February 8, 2015 - 10:37 pm

You’re such an incompetent, partisan hack Summers.

I know you are, but what am I?

How many hands do you think have been washed due to a government mandated sign?

I’d say probably quite a few. And anyway, just one person saved from a deadly food-borne disease makes it totally worth it. Suggesting to leave that “up to the market”, as Tillis did, is simply insane.

Harry February 9, 2015 - 7:17 am

if you think restaurant workers wash their hands because of a posted sign, you’re a bigger dumba$$ than I originally thought.

chris February 9, 2015 - 9:30 am

If you think they don’t, you’re an even bigger one.

Barry Summers February 9, 2015 - 1:15 pm

“dumba$$”?

Is that an “ass” who gets paid for being dumb?

Oh, I see your confusion – no, that’s Thom Tillis you’re thinking of. I’m dumb on my own dime.
