Ashvegas Hot Sheet: New musical director chosen for Asheville Symphony

Here’s more of what’s going around, including exciting news about the Asheville Symphony. Here we go:

-The Asheville Symphony has chosen a new musical director and plans to introduce him/her to the community. The symphony narrowed its list of finalists to a diverse group of six during its search to replace conductor Daniel Meyer. Here’s the Asheville Symphony event to introduce the new musical director. -Allegiant airlines is adding more flights to the Asheville Regional Airport. The departures from Asheville to Fort Lauderdale will more than double; the year-over-year local departures to Orlando will increase by 55 percent. The new flights start in October.

-The Asheville airport is booming. Asheville ranks No. 2 in the country in seating capacity growth since 2016, according to Bloomberg News. The airport has had four consecutive years of record-setting growth and just opened a big new parking deck.

-What’s next for the airport? It is finishing up its runway expansion project this year and will begin a study of its terminal infrastructure. Look for construction on a terminal expansion within the next two years.

-National Geographic Traveler has been filming around town and will air a 30-minute TV documentary on Asheville this September. This video shoot is paid for by Asheville tourism officials and part of an ongoing partnership between Explore Asheville and National Geographic Traveler that began last year. Air dates/times tba.

-A large landslide has closed N.C. Hwy 9 near Bat Cave. It’s going to take months to clean up.

-Sold: the building at 26 Battery Park Ave. in downtown Asheville (there’s where Kilwin’s is located) for $2.422 million. The building had been owned by the same family since 1943. No big changes coming. Ellington Realty Group, an Asheville-based commercial real estate and property management firm, facilitated this transaction. From a press release:

Burns Aldridge, the managing broker of Ellington Realty Group who represented the buyers of 26 Battery Park, said “This building has been owned by the same family since 1943, and we are pleased that the new owner is a local investor who owns two other downtown properties.”

-Also sold: the building at 48 Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville, home to Chestnut restaurant, for $3.2 million. The restaurant will remain. Ellington Realty Group also facilitated this transaction.

-A new “denim and decor” shop called blu29 is opening in the former Sow True Seed location on South Lexingon Ave.

-Festival watch: Xpand Fest on Saturday; VeganFest on Sunday in downtown Asheville.

-Costume Drama: A Fashion Show, where local designers compete for cash prizes in a Project Runway-like show, is set for 7:30 p.m. on July 6 at Asheville Community Theatre. The event will benefit the theater. This year, 20 designers will compete in four categories: Hardware, Light, Paper, and Revisionist History. It would be nice to mention Friday nights’ RiverMusic concert at New Belgium. It’s free, kid- friendly, runs from 5-9:30 and features 3 bands including headliner Tony Furtado.
