More of what’s going around:

-There’s a new indoor skateboard park planned for the River Arts District. It will be built inside one of the old warehouses on Old Lyman Street. More from radskateparkavl:

Interior walls are down. The owners of the building are now doing their portion of the renovations. In August, Chad Roy and his crew from New York will be heading down to Asheville to build the park. Construction of the park will take about a month, and we hope to be open in the fall.

Smiling Hara, the local tempeh-maker, has moved its headquarters and tempeh production to an 8,000-square-foot facility in Barnardsville. Also, the company has announced that fans should be on the lookout for a new flavor later this summer.

Word on the street: A new restaurant, The Filling Station, is planned for the ground floor of a new apartment complex going up on Coxe Avenue in Asheville’s South Slope. It is being planned by the same folks who run The Filling Station deli and sub shop in Bryson City.

Aloft Asheville Downtown has announced that it is donating $10,000 to local non-profit Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue (CAAR), according to a press release. Here’s more:

Aloft was awarded a $5,000 grant to donate to the local charity of its choice by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide as the recipient of its 2016 Starwood Cares for the Community Hotel Volunteer Award for the North American region. McKibbon Hospitality, who owns and manages the hotel, is matching Starwood’s donation, bringing the total donation to $10,000.

“We are grateful that Starwood and McKibbon have made it possible for us to present such a generous donation to Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue,” said David McCartney, general manager of Aloft Asheville Downtown. “We have a strong partnership with Charlie’s Angels and are pleased that this donation will help them save the lives of more animals in Western North Carolina, which is a cause the entire Aloft team is very passionate about.”

CAAR will use the funds to purchase a new van, which will be used to transport animals from local kill shelters to their Safe Haven facility or new foster home. Aloft Asheville Downtown has been partnering with CAAR since 2014, when they joined forces to launch a foster dog adoption program. Through the program, Aloft fosters dogs in need of a forever home, housing one dog at a time who can be adopted by hotel guests and visitors. Since its inception, the program has placed 60 dogs with their forever families.

“The McKibbon team is very proud of what Aloft has accomplished with Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue as well as numerous other non-profits in the Asheville community,” said John McKibbon, chairman of McKibbon Hospitality. “They continue to set the bar for how hotels can make a meaningful impact in their communities by identifying causes their associates are passionate about and sharing their time and resources to help make a difference.”

In addition to the $10,000 donation, Starwood Specialty & Select Brands has donated funds for Aloft Asheville Downtown to host an event to support fundraising efforts for CAAR. Details for the event will be announced at a later date. For more information about Aloft Asheville Downtown, visit www.aloftashevilledowntown.com or www.facebook.com/aloftasheville.
