Here’s more of what’s going on, including an upcoming local talk by a HGTV producer. Here we go:
-HGTV producer Santos Lopez will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 25 meeting of AdClub WNC. He’ll be talking about successfully rebranding the cable network, and how casting, music, voiceover, an emotional hook were all critical to that success. AdClub WNC is open to marketing professionals, creative directors, art directors, agency producers, video/film producers, graphic designers, casting directors, costume/makeup artists and interested business owners.
-Word on the street: Oscar Blues wants a downtown Asheville presence and has been on the hunt for taproom location.
-The Carolina Lane site of a downtown building collapse five years ago has been cleaned up and construction is starting on a new, 2-story building that will house four live-work units, according to construction permits.
-The Tyler Building, a massive structure at the corner of North Lexington Avenue/Rankin Ave/ Walnut Ave downtown is a hotbed of renovation and new office/retail. MTN Merch has opened a new location that fronts Lexington. Up on the Rankin Avenue level, a sleek new architect’s office has opened inside, and Noble Cider has announced plans to open a slick new restaurant.
-Plans to build a new Duke Energy substation at the corner of Clingman and Patton avenues are moving through city planning bureaucracy. Demolition of the old car dealership on the site will likely occur before year’s end. Background on the Duke Energy substation here.

-The Asheville Citizen-Times is hiring a new reporter to cover social issues and education. The newspaper, which has laid off dozens of newsroom staffers over the last decade, was also recently looking for a reporter to cover “trending” news topics. (This item was corrected on 10/9/18 to correctly state that the newspaper is hiring one reporter to cover both social issues and education.)
-Franny’s Farmacy, one of a new wave of hemp dispensaries in Asheville, is celebrating its grand opening on Merrimon Avenue on Wednesday.
-Calling all peasants, rogues, revelers and wanderers: The Festival of Heroes will be held Saturday at Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre in the Montford neighborhood. The event resembles a Renaissance fair, complete with artists, fighters, spiritualists and more.
-Speaking of Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre: the outdoor venue in the Montford neighborhood, which has been home to the Montford Park Players for decades, is now playing host to music concerts following some significant renovations. The amphitheater is hosting Goldie and the Screamers this weekend. Next up is Sanctum Sully and Brushfire Stankgrass.
