-Here’s the fall color report from the Western Carolina University’s biology department for the week of Sept. 18. From the report:
I predict that starting next weekend, we will start to see noticeable changes on the hillsides at the higher elevations, such as the summit of Grandfather and other high peaks here in the Southern Appalachians, and then it will begin moving downhill and the true fall leaf color season will get into gear! Remember, at an elevation of 3,000’ to about 4,500’, the peak will be early to mid-October, especially in mountains north of Asheville up to the Virginia border. Lower elevations will peak in late October, and below 2,000’, in early November even.
-Buffalo Nickel restaurant in West Asheville has announced that is has hired a new executive chef, John Bausone, and revamped its menu. From the press release:
Bausone honed his skills during his tenure at Grovewood Tavern and Beachland Ballroom, both in Cleveland, Ohio. Bausone learned his art under the tutelage of Chef Robert Reynolds of the Chef Studio in Portland, Oregon and has developed a flair for creative, inventive dishes curated from fresh, local and sustainable ingredients.
Chef Bausone has revamped Buffalo Nickel’s dinner, tavern and dessert menu offerings and will expand the in house catering menu. Special dinners paired with local craft beers, wines and spirits will be offered, and Buffalo Nickel will also begin lunch service this fall.
-Work in continuing on the new Crucible Bar at 140 Roberts St. in Asheville’s River Arts District. The bar, which will seat about 25 with more seating at an adjacent patio, will serve wine and cocktails. The bar is next to the Asheville Glass Center, and is the work of clothing designer Anna Toth and Brandon Skupski, a woodworker.
–Chris Chalk, an Asheville native, is an actor with a long list of Broadway and television credits. He’s got a new role as Lucius on the hit Fox show Gotham. Here’s a recent interview with Chalk in Jet magazine.

hauntedheadnc, Smoothie king is still coming. I think Mr. Sushi is going in where Roly Poly used to be.
I thought some coffee shop was going in the old Roly Poly space.
“Mr. Sushi restaurant is coming to 1578 Hendersonville Road, according to permits.”
So… If that’s the case, then what happened to the smoothie place that was supposed to go in that spot?
This news kind of sucks. Asheville Sushi and Hibachi is just up the hill from this place.
