-In case you thought you missed it (I sure did), the James Beard Foundation announced recently that it was postponing its nominee announcement (which was scheduled for March 25), as well as the annual awards ceremony, which is now moved back to this summer. When new dates are selected for all events, they will be announced formally via the James Beard Foundation website and social media outlets, the organization said. “The time will come to acknowledge and celebrate our industry but now, more than ever, our focus is to use our voice and platform as a resource for our community to face the current challenges that exist as a result of this crisis.” Several Asheville chefs are in the running.
Here’s the local list, from the James Beard Award nominations announced in February: The first round of nominations for this year’s James Beard Awards was announced this morning, and once again several Asheville chefs and restaurants were honored: Chef Ashleigh Shanti at Benne on Eagle restaurant in Asheville was nominated in the Rising Star Chef of the Year category, a huge honor for this young chef; Chef John Fleer, owner of Rhubarb restaurant in Asheville (who also launched the new Benne on Eagle restaurant) was nominated in the Outstanding Chef category; Chef Katie Button of Curate restaurant was nominated in the Best Chef/Southeast category, as has Chef Meherewan Irani of Chai Pani restaurant; and Cultura restaurant in Asheville has been nominated in the Best New Restaurant category this year. The restaurant is the the brainchild of Asheville Chef Jacob Sessoms and Wicked Weed Brewing co-founder Walt Dickinson and is located on the city’s South Slope. Congratulations to all!
