More of what’s going around:

Appalachian Occasions is a new food truck in Asheville that will offer Southern cuisine from local farmers, according to the Mountain BizWorks Instagram feed, which has also announced The Tacoed Wheel bike repair and taco food truck in the Asheville area.

-An Asheville couple has launched a new business in which they offer cooking classes in a 1915 Asheville cottage. Check out Cottage Cooking.

Deschutes Brewery in Oregon has hired a new director of brewing, according to oregonlive.com.

-The city of Asheville will rededicate the Urban Trail stop on Walnut Street that’s been the site of some controversy. The original marker was a bench with a bronze sculpture, but some locals started complaining that homeless people were hanging out there and creating disturbances, so they created a super tiny bench to replace it. Now that bench is gone and we have a wagon wheel pedestal. The ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on June 19 with a reception following at 5 Walnut Wine Bar.

-Former Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower announces he’ll run again this year:

Former Vice-Mayor and City Councilman Carl Mumpower has announced his intentions to run for one of three upcoming seats on the Asheville City Council. Mumpower is a Republican known for his consistent conservative stance and willingness to resist pressures from all sides. “I am running for one reason,” says Mumpower. “When we lost conservative representation on Asheville’s governing body, we also lost balance.” “Opposition views keep the lights on the majority’s actions – it helps to have a watchdog in the mix.” “Being careful with other people’s money and safety were and will remain my core agendas,” says Mumpower. “As a self-employed psychologist with prior public service experience and no ties to special interests, I am in a unique position to serve as a counterbalancing voice. Seven shades of blue is not a good thing.”

-Candler manufacturer Jacob Holm Group will celebrate expansion and its 10-year anniversary in the Asheville area next week:

The Jacob Holm Group, an industry leader for spunlace nonwoven fabrics, will celebrate the expansion of its Candler, N.C. facility in the Asheville area, as well as the site’s 10-year anniversary, on Tuesday, June 16, 2015. A large turnout is anticipated including local government officials, business partners and employees. At the celebration, Martin Mikkelsen, CEO of Jacob Holm Group, will address the Jacob Holm Group’s recent transformation.

“The past few months have been very exciting for us. We completed the construction of a new line at Candler, and we brought the global Sontara® nonwovens business into our Group through the recent acquisition from DuPont,” said Martin Mikkelsen. “Our group is evolving rapidly, and I am happy to note that all Jacob Holm and Sontara® employees have contributed to this successful development.”

Established in 2005, the Candler, N.C. facility produces spunlace nonwoven fabrics for the personal and home care wipe, and hygiene markets. In 2010, Jacob Holm completed a strategic analysis aiming to identify opportunities to expand the capabilities and product portfolio. The aim was to develop a unique technology that would set new benchmarks for performance in the dispersible wipes market. This involved a major investment in a completely customized, state-of-the-art production asset, which is now being commercialized to produce flushable, and proprietary, moist toilet tissue fabrics as well as selected other products.

Dr. Mumpower is the ONLY candidate running that is WORTHY of your vote…all the rest are silly lieberal progressives like the ones who have NOT led AVL in good ways…AVL suffers DECADES of NON leadership by lieberals…

Barry Summers June 21, 2015 - 12:03 pm

Yes, do please continue with the insults. That’s been so effective for you in past elections.

Thanks for your good work.

Just remember, he’s not a REAL “doctor”.

I agree with NFB: Gonna miss Jan Davis. I don’t blame him for stepping aside. Jan served our community very well for 12 years, and that’s just on council. If we had more Jan Davis’ and Gordon Smith’s on Council, Asheville would be in a better place. Both are able to discuss issues and show respect for differing opinions without talking down to people. That’s rare in today’s political world.

Nope.

Unaffiliated Voter June 25, 2015 - 1:44 pm

Mumpower has been greatly missed as a sound mind and thoughtful individual on an otherwise misguided council of years running…

Boyle’s piece in the C-T was weird: it’s all very well having a range of voices on City Council, but they have to be elected first, and as NFB notes, the right-of-center candidates in recent cycles have run campaigns that were more about crapping over Asheville and embracing GOP/Tea Party martyr status than suggesting how it might be run better.

(Tim ‘Loser’ Moffitt wanted to gerrymander city districts, but Mumplestiltskin was elected under the same rules as the current council.)

The idea that City Council is ‘far left’ is laughable, the idea that it runs the city equally so.

Barry Summers June 15, 2015 - 3:49 pm

Yeah, I don’t know what Boyle is smoking. I can think of one Council member that one might call “far left”, but the others are all solidly in the middle. The lack of any voices on the right is a result of the local GOP running people like Tim Peck, Mark Cates, Carl Mumpower, etc. for Council. If a genuine conservative who didn’t hate Asheville just for being Asheville took a run at it, he might have a good chance.

Since their new publisher took over, AC-T has been showing signs of bashing Asheville just for the sake of selling more papers in the County.

NFB June 15, 2015 - 6:39 pm

“If a genuine conservative who didn’t hate Asheville just for being Asheville took a run at it, he might have a good chance.”

And, even though most of my political views fall left of center I *might* (key word) even vote for such a candidate out of what I also see as a need for more of a range of views. But I’ve not seen a center/right candidate run in recent years, just those well outside the mainstream.

I’m sorry that Jan Davis is not running again, although after 12 years I don’t blame him for taking a pass at another term. He represents the center, understand and represents to views of the business community, but does so without all the arrogance, in your face bluster, and egotistical grandstanding so many who have claimed to represent that segment of the community in the past have had. Someone who may not always agree with the approaches of his/her fellow council members but who can work well with them.

Surely in a city of nearly 90,000 people there is somebody like that.

NFB June 15, 2015 - 6:41 pm

I will also add (and yes, I know I am guilty of this too) that there are five stories reported in this “Hot Sheet” thread. Yet every single comment is about Carl Mumpower. Given how much he craves being the center of attention he’s already won!

Barry Summers June 15, 2015 - 9:09 pm

I’ll echo that – I too am disappointed that Jan chose not to run again. And part of me can’t believe I’m saying that, since we have disagreed over many things over the past decade.

But I’ve always found him to be gracious and fair, and a true public servant. And you knew who you were dealing with. More than I can say about one or two of the current candidates…

And I think he truly recognized the situation that Asheville is in re: the NCGA and it’s last local enforcer, Chuck McGrady. (Again, something that I wish all the current candidates understood.)

Enjoy the new bass boat, Jan. You’ve served Asheville well.

Tim Peck June 16, 2015 - 1:11 pm

“the local GOP running people like Tim Peck”

Once again, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Barry Summers June 16, 2015 - 7:56 pm

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Maybe you would have done better if you hadn’t chosen that as your campaign slogan.

luther blissett June 17, 2015 - 12:44 am

To be fair to Mouthpiece, he hasn’t been part of the “GOP running people” since he was part of the “GOP losing badly people.”

(Is he now an official Mouthpiece for Shady McGrady, or is he just mouthpiecing off the clock?)

Tim Peck June 17, 2015 - 8:43 am

How fun. A thread about me. Like clockwork.

Barry Summers June 17, 2015 - 11:45 am

It’s a thread about how lying to people, calling them stupid, calling them “the enemy”, hasn’t produced many Asheville electoral victories in recent years for GOP-backed candidates.

If anyone wants to embrace that as being about them, have at it.

Tim Peck June 18, 2015 - 11:15 am

“It’s a thread about how lying to people”

Indeed. As I indicated earlier, it is foul quality present in your every utterance.

I understand the City is having trouble with its budget. You wouldn’t have anything to do with that, would you?

Barry Summers June 18, 2015 - 1:04 pm

“It’s a thread about how lying to people”

Indeed. As I indicated earlier, it is foul quality present in your every utterance.

No you didn’t. You said I was ignorant, not lying. Ha! There! I’ve run rings round you logically!

“I understand the City is having trouble with its budget. You wouldn’t have anything to do with that, would you?”

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! Sure. If it floats your boat to think that I have anything at all to do with Asheville’s budget, go for it.

Tim Peck June 22, 2015 - 8:32 am

“If it floats your boat”

Yes. It floats my boat. And sinks yours. Water is like that.

Edubs June 17, 2015 - 4:50 pm

Funny, Peck. This was your same comeback on a MountainX comment board a few days ago. You’re starting to get rather boring and predictable.

It works like this:
1. Peck makes some silly (in-on-one) statement, trolling the comments section.
2. Someone responds and presents a very direct question related to your previous statement.
3a. You respond to said question.

Instead, you’ve been going with 3b. – “Not respond to question. Use ego to suggest that commenter is making comment directly about you.”

Come on, Peck. You can do better than that. You’ve lost your mojo since Moffitt was sent packing, I suppose (and, yes, that WAS about you).

Barry Summers June 15, 2015 - 11:53 am

Speaking of the Asheville water issue, the video of the June 3rd NC Court of Appeals hearing is available to watch, along with links to all the documents, at:

SaveOurWaterWNC(dot)com

(My personal favorite moment: youtube player timestamp 1:01:50. Rep. Moffitt was sitting just off camera to the right.)

It’s never too late to quit the GOP, Carl.

Dad jim it. I saw bigger things in the works for ole’ Carl. I was hoping a real “tea party patriot” like Carl might step up and give Richard Burr a run for his money in 2016. Oh well, at least the local comedy corp will have plenty of material.

Santa June 13, 2015 - 9:01 am

Good ol Carl! We can use some of your comedic relief. I miss you staking out the men’s room at jam band concerts. I miss you putting on a “Go Brainless” rally in response to the “Go Topless” Raelian goofiness. Sadly your “Carl and his glasses” campaign ad has been scrubbed from the internet. That was a classic! Your glasses were mesmerizing. I’m sorry we haven’t been paying attention to you for a few years. Whatcha gonna do next Doctor Carl?

cwaster June 13, 2015 - 9:46 am

Good ‘ole Dumbpower. Haven’t we all had enough of this guy? I certainly have.

Unaffiliated Voter June 25, 2015 - 1:47 pm

…only if yer an ignorant lieberal who has no clue about the real world …

Barry Summers June 13, 2015 - 12:00 am

I will say I respect Carl’s stand on the water issue. As I recall, he vowed to resign from the GOP if “my fellow Republicans in Raleigh chose to support this destructive, unprincipled, and unprecedented legislative action.”

bit.ly/1C46gaS (drag & drop)

Um, Carl? They supported it. Have you resigned from the GOP?

Tim Peck June 13, 2015 - 9:55 am
murphy June 13, 2015 - 6:33 pm

You are correct… and it sure does appear that he remains a proud member of the “G-no-P”…

NFB June 14, 2015 - 12:00 pm

Well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

In any case I also agree with him (up to a point) that Asheville City Council could use a bit more balance and someone who can bring a bit of a different perspective than is there now, but not him.

I would go as far as to say that Carl Mumpower is one of the big reasons conservatives and Republicans have not fared well in recent city council elections. His constant sanctimonious lecturing the rest of us about how we aren’t living up to his lofty moral standards and using his council seat to thank God that he is not like other men turned off even Republicans. Anyone else remember how the Henderson County Republican Party refused to support his congressional campaign against Heath Shuler in 2008 because of all that?

And look at who conservatives and Republicans have put forth for council in recent years — candidates who take a page from the Mumpower playbook as in Asheville is “the heart of enemy territory” where they must “strike a blow from the inside.”

I would welcome someone along the lines of, say Bill Russell — someone who offers a differing perspective but does so without all the arrogance and grandstanding so many conservatives seem obsessed with these days. Of course Russell is no longer a Republican, leaving the party while he served on Council after the local party was taken over by the Carl Mumpower/Chad Nesbitt crowd, which just further makes my point.

jtroop June 12, 2015 - 10:52 pm

Bring on the Mumps!

Sarcasm Rocks June 12, 2015 - 9:30 pm

Mumpower is totally correct about a need for balance; in everything but, especially politics.

It’s the concept of yin and yang and it’s important. Don’t want too much of either one. Things go off the rails when it’s nothing but an echo chamber.

Barry Summers June 12, 2015 - 11:43 pm

You’re being sarcastic though, right?

TheRealWorld June 13, 2015 - 9:03 pm

Sarcasm is right, Barry.

Everybody wants to blame the politicians for everything but won’t take responsibility for their own simplistic, myopic and highly media-manipulated “thinking.” People who buy completely into the red team/blue team charade are fools. And are clueless to the real story.

Former Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower announces he’ll run again this year

Thank the Gods. This Council race was looking like it was going to be boring.

NFB June 12, 2015 - 6:17 pm

Evidently he feels like he is not getting enough attention.

or nah June 12, 2015 - 12:33 pm

Carl Mumpower again? or Nah.
