-Asheville Chef Katie Button apparently likes bagels. She’s planning to turn the ground-level space below her popular Nightbell restaurant on Lexington Ave into Button and Co Bagel Shop, according to construction permits.
-A group of Buncombe County Democrats, hoping to capitalize on a wave of enthusiasm, announced the creation of a new political action committee earlier this week. Buncombe County commissioners Jasmine Beach-Ferrara and Al Whitesides, both Democrats, Asheville attorney John Noor, a local Democratic Party official, and activist Ashley McDermott announced the creation of the Mountain Values Coalition will raise money for local candidates in the Asheville area, as well as across Western North Carolina, they said.
-After lots of legal wrangling, the N.C. State Board of Elections appointed members to all county boards of election today. The Buncombe County Board of Elections is officially: Republicans Stephen Duncan and Jay Watson, and Democrats Jake Quinn and Lucy Mardis Smith.
-There’s a new Asheville craft brewery in the works. Two former brewers at Burial Beer, JT Murrett and Vince Tursi, have joined with Mike Semenec to open a brewery called DSSØLVR at 63 N. Lexington Ave., the Mountain Xpress reports. DSSØLVR is slated to open in early 2019, with brewing operations to begin later this year.
-Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue, in partnership with Aloft Asheville Downtown, has been named one of nine finalists with a chance to win $350,000 in Petco Foundation’s 2018 Innovation Showdown, according to a press release. The nomination is based on the rescue’s innovative approach to finding homes for dogs through its Aloft Asheville dog adoption program, which has resulted in nearly 100 adoptions and sparked other hotel adoption programs across the country. For Charlie’s Angels to win, folks have to vote online here. Voting ends April 9. Two finalists have already been chosen, and the third and final spot will go to the one organization with the most votes. The final three will then pitch their ideas Shark Tank-style onstage at the Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Care Expo. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges, made up of investors representing the nation’s top animal welfare organizations.

-The independent movie Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, a movie shot in Western North Carolina a few years ago, had is debut recently at SXSW and mixed reviews are coming in. The comedy stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride. Variety magazine particularly likes Brolin’s performance.
