Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Baked Pie Co. expands to Woodfin, Marco’s name change

Here’s more of what’s going around in this edition of the Ashvegas Hot Sheet:

-Baked Pie Company, which just opened its first shop on Long Shoals Road in April, has announced that it’s opening a second shop at Reynolds Village in Woodfin. The shop, with its tasty pies, pie flight sampler and pie shakes, has been an instant hit. The Reynolds Village location is scheduled to be open in November.

-Marco’s Pizzeria in Asheville announced last week that it was being forced to change its because another company with trademark rights was planning to open restaurants in Asheville. The new name of the popular pizza joint, which opened in Asheville in 1994, is 828 Family Pizzeria. This isn’t the first name change for Marco’s, which originally opened as Patsy’s Pizzeria.

-The International Bluegrass Music Awards were handed out last week, the Haywood County-based quintet Balsam Range won album of the year for their Mountain Vodoo record, which was released on Arden-based Mountain Home Records, the Raleigh News & Observer reports. The Earls of Leicester were named entertainer of the year, and Flatt Lonesome was named vocal group of the year.

-A second show has been announced for the Tedeschi Trucks Band performance coming to Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in January. The first show is set for Jan. 20, and the second will follow at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21. Tickets go on sale Thursday.

-A crowd-funding campaign for the family who lost two children in a tragic car wreck in south Asheville last week has raised more than $135,000.

Blue Ridge Public Radio has launched a new podcast called Going Deep. The show examines social issues through a sports lens and is hosted by the husband-and-wife team of John Shoop and Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop. He’s a former NFL and NCAA football coach, and she’s a theologian, minister and author. (This 2015 New York Times story about John Shoop’s firing as offensive coordinator for Purdue University’s football team has some great background on the couple. The story headline: Purdue Fires a Champion of Athletes’ Rights) The couple moved to Asheville not long ago, and Marcia Shoop started serving as pastor at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in north Asheville last summer. New episodes air on the public radio station at 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

-Mars Hill University will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lunsford Festival with a week-long series of events honoring Bascom Lamar Lunsford and his impact on mountain music. Monday marks the opening of a new exhibition at the Ramsey Center called “Minstrel of Appalachia: The Life and Legacy of Bascom Lamar Lunsford,” a selection of artifacts and photographs curated from the Ramsey Center’s Southern Appalachian Archives. Folk musician Betty Smith will be presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during this event. Friday at Moore Auditorium, the Bascom Lamar Lunsford “Minstrel of Appalachia” Festival Concert will feature folk musicians and dancers, including Roger Howell, Carol Rifkin, Bailey Mountain Cloggers and much more. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the festival moves outside to the university’s upper quad and will feature traditional regional music, dance, crafts, and the annual Ballad and more.
