Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Asheville police investigate fatal shooting Friday

Here’s more of what’s going around, including

-Asheville police are still investigating a fatal shooting the parking lot of a Patton Avenue shopping center Friday afternoon. Police responded to a call of a person with a gunshot wound at the Dollar General at 1001 Patton Ave. about 4:20 p.m. They found 18-year-old Clarence Michael Williams with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Mission Hospital, where he died. Witnesses told police they saw a yellow SUV flee the scene. Police located the vehicle and pulled over the driver on Fairview Road near Biltmore Village. They arrested Derrick Jamal Edwards, 24, of Weaverville and have charged him with first degree murder. Police want more information and are asking that if anyone witnessed the shooting or has more information, they are encouraged to contact the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110 or Buncombe County Crime Stoppers at (828) 255-5050.

-Word on the street is that DoctorDirectory held its fourth round of layoffs in Asheville last week, with about dozen people getting their pink slips. That brings the total number of people laid off to about 60 employees. DoctorDirectory employed about 130 people, mostly in the Asheville office, at its peak. Corporate parent Ziff Davis has been making the cuts since they bought DoctorDirectory as part of a bigger deal that included Everyday Heath about a year ago.
