Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Asheville bidding to host Fed Cup tennis, WLOS reports


Here’s more of what’s going around:

-Asheville is in the running to host the first round of the 2018 Fed Cup, WLOS-TV reports. The Fed Cup is the “premier international team competition in women’s tennis,” according to wikipedia.

-In case you missed it, Asheville has landed a European-style bicycling race for amateur riders called Haute RouteThe event will be held in May 2018, the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission reports. Background on Asheville’s bid for the Haute Route event here.

-Homestead is a creative studio in Asheville that “exists at the intersection of traditional craft and modern design.”

-The Salvage Station’s culinary duo of Joshua Heald and Gwendolyn Hageman will compete against 50 of the nation’s best burger chefs this weekend at the 2017 World Burger Championship in Orange Beach, Alabama, according to a press release. More:

The winner will claim bragging rights for the World’s Best Burger and $10,000 in cash prizes. Salvage Station qualified for this event by winning 1st place at the WNC Battle of the Battle of the Burger in July. The winning burger featured a steak burger topped with Sweet Georgia Peach BBQ pulled pork, applewood bacon, garlic aioli, Monterey jack cheese, and fried onion rings.

On The Inside Lingerie, an Asheville-based lingerie brand, recently celebrated the grand opening of its brick-and-mortar location at 842 Haywood Road in West Asheville. Created by Elise Olson, On The Inside is known for custom fit, handmade lingerie that is made with luxurious laces and sustainable fabrics, according to the shop’s press. The shop will also carry other ethically-made lingerie and loungewear brands from around the world.

-Asheville ghost-hunter Joshua P. Warren has launched a new website,, which lists weird items for sale, such a pea soup can signed by actress Linda Blair of The Exorcist fame and a vintage “last rites” kit complete with altar cross and holy water sprinkler.

-The Rev. Billy Graham celebrates his 99th birthday today (Nov. 7). Here are five reasons why Rev. Billy Graham still matters, the Charlotte Observer reports.

-UNC Asheville men’s basketball team, and their coach, is garnering a lot of pre-season attention. The team has had back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years. It made the NCAA Tournament in 2016. The university’s sports program reports that ESPN’s Jeff Goodman predicts UNCA Coach Nick McDevitt will be national coach of the year.

-“The House That Beer Built,” an Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity home sponsored by several Asheville breweries, starts construction this month.
