Ashvegas Hot Sheet: Asheville area could see wind, rain from Hurricane Nate early next week

Here’s more of what’s going around, including info about an approaching storm called Hurricane Nate.

-Weather forecasters are predicting that a storm in the Gulf of Mexico will grow to hurricane strength before striking the Florida Panhandle and moving up into the mountains of Western North Carolina. The tropical depression/possible hurricane named Nate could bring winds and 3 to 5 inches of rain to the mountains by Tuesday or Wednesday.

-Pet Vet on Patton is raising money for the Humane Society of Puerto Rico. The Pet Vet will match half of what is raised, up to $750. To make a donation, stop by the office or call 232-9990.

-Fans of the annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam are getting restless as they await the announcement of this year’s concert line-up. Look for announcement any day now for the early December event at the US Cellular Center. The concert is a big fundraiser for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity.

-The Beer City Beatdown is this weekend at the US Cellular Center.

Asheville Oktoberfest is this weekend.

-The annual Fermenting Fest of Marshall is set for Nov. 5.

-A new farm brewery called Sideways Farm and Brewery is opening in Etowa in Henderson County, according to the Hendersonville Times-News. More:

Sideways Farm and Brewery, on Eade Road off Old Highway 64, is going back to the roots of craft beer. Reflective of Etowah’s rural setting, it will be one of the few “farm” breweries in Western North Carolina.

Owners Jon and Carrieann Schneider are building a 2,400-square-foot brewhouse on the 11-acre farm they live on, one of Etowah’s oldest historical farmlands. The Schneiders’ goal is to take beer back to time before industrial agriculture and mega-global corporations, using hyperlocal ingredients

-A Puerto Rico Hurricane relief benefit will be held from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at BimBeriBon on Haywood Road in West Asheville. Tickets cost $10. Tropical funk/soul beats by terrasonic and Nugget Box.

-At 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in Pack Square Park, Democracy NC is hosting “A Demonstration Against Judicial Gerrymandering,” according to a press release. More:

This week, the N.C. General Assembly will take up House Bill 717, which is legislation designed to redraw the state’s judicial maps for partisan control. We’re calling on community members from across Western North Carolina to come together on Oct. 9 and help us make a strong public stand against this brazen attack on our courts.

-At 6 p.m. on Oct. 17, Democracy NC will host “A Teach-in: Why Raleigh’s Agenda is on the Asheville Ballot This Fall” at the Grant Center on Livingston Street, according to a press release. Here’s more:

During this educational event (in a “breakout” style), attendees will discuss the Asheville referendum on Asheville City Council districts that will be on the ballot during the general election this fall. We’ll have a detailed grounding in what redistricting is from UNCA Political Science Professor Ashely Moraguez, a survey of the NC political landscape of why this specific legislation was imposed on the city of Asheville by the NC General Assembly from Democracy NC Campaign Director Marcus Bass, and a map-drawing simulation by local Geographic Information System (Mapping) & Urban Planning Professional Blake Esselstyn, founder of Frontwater, LLC of Asheville.
