Asheville’s Biltmore Estate prepares to host USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships this week

One of the biggest sporting events to ever be hosted at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville is set to start Tuesday: The USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships.

The event will draw bicycle riders from around the U.S. for five days of cylco-cross racing, which takes riders across all kinds of terrain (think mud, and lots of it). A three-kilometer course has been set up at Biltmore, and includes everything from a specially constructed wooden bridge to a portion of the course that cuts through an historic barn on the property, as well as portions of the course that traverse pavement and gravel.

There are races for kids and non-competitive bikers, as well as elite male and female pro racers.  The races are also open to spectators. Tickets cost $16.05 per person, age 10 and older (younger kids watch for free). (The tickets do not include a tour of the Biltmore House.)

Jeremy Powers, last year’s national champion, will be racing to retain his title on Jan. 10.

Yes! Sierra Nevada will gladly sell you a beer in a cup that is refillable! The course is fun and the vibe is good. Doughnut race tomorrow at 3 should be a blast. The hotly contested titles are going to be a big time throw down on Sunday! The Kask Frequent Flyover lounge will be a rocking green monster for shizle!!! Rain or shine it’ll be a good time!

Looks to be much warmer this weekend. Also, I believe Sierra Nevada will have a tent.

Will there be beer sold to patrons watching the race? Can you bring beer? Beer?

Chris January 5, 2016 - 6:56 am

Yes there will be beer being sold. You know how the B-more rolls with outside food and drink, that being said you can do your thing just dont be over the top with it. ie. on the down low. Its cross you wont be the only one doing it.

By ‘Muddy’ do you mean rock hard ice dirt?

Al Roker January 4, 2016 - 3:05 pm

Mike – Look for rain on Friday and Sunday with temps in the 50s to hopefully make for conditions that fit your definition of ‘muddy’
