Asheville freelance photographer, David Simchock, has taken a top prize in the 12th Annual Independent Music Awards (IMA). Simchock’s colorful and captivating image of New Orleans emerging superstar, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews was nominated for the award earlier in the year, along with photos from three other photographers. A panel of industry judges recently announced the IMA winners in a diverse range of categories, with Simchock’s capture coming out on top in the Artist Concert Photography group. …
The award-winning shot was captured at the 2011 Appel Farm Arts & Music Festival in Elmer, New Jersey, not far from Simchock’s roots in Central New Jersey. This was not the first time, nor the last time, that he had the chance to photograph “Shorty” in concert. “The first time I saw Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue perform was at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Fest. Though they weren’t performing on the stages that I was covering (for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archives), there was a buzz about the festival grounds that this was a ‘must see’ local band, so I broke away from my designated stages to see what was in store from the local heroes. I was blown away! Since then, TS&OA’s stature has sky-rocketed around the world, but I’ve been able to cover them quite a few times, including the Appel Farm gig in New Jersey, with the most recent performance being at the annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in my new home town of Asheville, North Carolina.”
