Asheville delights in Oscar win for ‘Searching for Sugar Man’

When Searching for Sugar Man won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday night, a host of Asheville folks rejoiced. After all, Asheville has been on the Sixto Rodriguez bandwagon for a long time before last year’s release of the brilliant documentary.

Rodriguez played the Grey Eagle in January 2009. Here’s what the Grey Eagle posted today on its FB page:

Searching for Sugar Man! Oscar winner! We’re proud to say that the club is thanked in the credits. The Grey Eagle and Harvest Records had the pleasure of hosting the legend, Sixto Rodriguez, a couple of years ago while they were filming. There is some Grey Eagle footage in the DVD bonus clips. So…when do we get our trophy??

When Rodriguez played in Asheville, he was backed by a group of Asheville musicians, all of whom I’m sure rejoiced at the win.

Read the Ashvegas movie review of Searching for Sugar Man. And here’s a Mountain Xpress video of Rodriguez playing at the Grey Eagle.
