Jasmine Guy, an actress best known for her role as Whitley on the TV sitcom A Different World, which was a spinoff of The Cosby Show, was spotted around downtown Asheville recently. (She stopped in at the Satellite Gallery, according to Bill.) Guy, who studied dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center before embarking on her acting career, won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series from 1990-05, more than any other actress
Guy now lives in Atlanta and continues to pursue her acting. She’s a regular on Vampire Diaries (that show’s star, Ian Somerhalder, was in Asheville last year filming the Showtime series Years of Living Dangerously, featuring Asheville resident Anna Jane Joyner).
Speaking of The Cosby Show, another of that show’s stars is an Asheville resident. Sabrina Le Beauf played Sondra Huxtable on the long-running comedy.
