Ever wanted to explore Asheville on a crisp, fall Saturday, support an agency that’s been serving WNC for 100 years and have the opportunity to win HUGE prizes at the same time? Then the 2nd annual “Hunt for Red October” – a city-wide scavenger hunt to benefit the American Red Cross – is the event you’ve waited for.

On Saturday, October 23, 2010, participating teams of four in the “Hunt for Red October” will compete for prizes including 42” flat-screen televisions, netbooks, camcorders and video game consoles by finding items and solving the clues of the game.

“It’s a simple, fun and cool event for residents and visitors alike,” said Patrick Fitzsimmons, CEO of the Red Cross in WNC. “Based on last year’s feedback, this event is one of the most unique and enjoyable few hours to appreciate what we have in this beautiful area.

“We wanted to give back to the community that supports us throughout the year and this event has proven to be a great opportunity to have fun with our supporters,” Fitzsimmons added.

Here’s how it works:

* At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23. clues for the “Hunt” will be posted on-line at www.redcross.wnc.org . Four-person teams will spend the next four hours solving clues, taking cell phone photos and finding items in and around Asheville.

* Following the contest which ends at 2:00 p.m., scores will be tabulated, winners announced and prizes awarded.

* During the tabulation process, an Oktoberfest party will begin under the big tent at the Red Cross headquarters, featuring brats, B-B-Q, beer, soft drinks, music, dancing and more.

* The week prior to the Saturday “Hunt”, WWNC will also present the “Hunt for the BIG Red Cross”. Each day, a 6’X6’ Big Red Cross will be hidden in locations around town. On WWNC’s morning show, clues to its whereabouts will given and the first caller to correctly identify its location will win a prize.

* Additionally, during September, Arby’s will be selling coupon booklets worth $10 for only one-dollar with the proceeds benefiting the Red Cross.

The event is sponsored by Arby’s, Best Buy and Clear Channel Asheville. Registration begins on-line on September 1 at www.redcrosswnc.org . Hard copy registration forms are also available at the Red Cross office on Edgewood Road. Registration is $25 per person or $100 per team with all proceeds benefiting the local Red Cross programs and activities.
