APD “crash zones”: Patton Ave., Charlotte St., Biltmore/Meadow Road intersection

Share

If you’ve lived in Asheville long it’s probably not a surprise that the Asheville Police Department has identified Patton Avenue from Florida to Leicester, Charlotte Street from I-240 to Macon Avenue, and the intersection of Biltmore and Meadow as “crash zones” with a high frequency of accidents.

The Patton Avenue crash zone had 58 accidents in the last six months alone, resulting in $126K in property damage.

If you drive these areas or live in the neighborhood, this short APD video is a worthwhile reminder of how to stay safe.

I just came home last night from a 4 day trip to Asheville. As a non-resident, I can say that street signage in Asheville probably contributes to many accidents. You all may know exactly where you’re going but for visitors it’s a confusing spaghetti bowl of highways with infinite different numbers and streets that change names multiple times – if you can even find a sign to tell you which street you’re on!! This was my 3rd trip to Asheville in a year and it’s no easier finding my way around than the first time and it surely drives locals nuts to follow someone who is trying to figure out where they are. LOVE the city but do hope there is a plan to address how poorly marked the streets are in Asheville – and I’m from Chicago so it’s not as if busy streets and highways are new to me!

It’s inexplicable to me why the Biltmore Avenue/Meadow Rd/Swannanoa River Rd intersection hasn’t been improved by DOT and the city. Traffic backs up in both directions on Meadow Rd/Swannanoa River Rd on a daily basis. There needs to be double left turn lanes on Swannanoa River Rd (to southbound Biltmore); double left turn lanes on Meadow (to northbound Biltmore); and a long dedicated right turn lane on Meadow (to southbound Biltmore). In addition, Meadow needs to be widened and straightened from Victoria Rd to Biltmore.
