The bearded M.D. visited Asheville for a speaking event in support of his book, Spontaneous Happiness.
The above image is from Weil’s Facebook page and appears with the following note:
As several commenters noted here yesterday, it’s absolutely vital to know your mushrooms before eating anything that is picked wild. Case in point: while harvesting delicious maitake and blewits near the Biltmore estate in NC, we found this perfect example of the “Destroying Angel,” the commonest deadly mushroom here. If you are not 100 percent sure of the species, don’t eat it!
Weil was foraging for wild mushrooms with Alan Muskat, a local man renowned for his forage-to-table mushroom hunting/cooking events and workshops:
Collecting maitake mushrooms with naturalist Alan Muskat near Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC. I always love a good mushroom hunt! More photos to come.
More from my day of mushroom hunting with Alan Muskat near the Biltmore estate in NC – lots of maitakes and blewits! Will post more, including cooking photos, tomorrow!
Weil also dined at Laughing Seed Cafe in downtown Asheville on Thursday night.

Awesome!
I also took him to OM Sanctuary, Ashevillage Institute, lunch prepared by Mike McGirr, and to a class at The REAL Center.
