Abracadabra! Magic festival set to wow Asheville May 2-4

Asheville has a mysterious new festival up its sleeve this spring, welcoming The Weekend of Wonder on May 2-4. For 3 days, a dream team of master magicians will appear in a dazzling showcase of Close-up, Stage and Street Magic, One-Man Shows and All-Star Galas. World renowned magicians, Jay Scott Berry and Maxwell Blade have teamed up to produce this first annual event.

Joining them will be a host of international superstars, including, from Las Vegas, multi award-winning, Jeff McBride, World Champion Close-up Artist, Michael Ammar and Magical Minstrel, Andrew Goldenhersh. The Guest of Honor is local celebrity and magic shop owner, Ricky Boone, who will perform and lecture. The festivities also feature the crème of the crop of local and national Artists including, “MagicBrad”, TJ Shimeld, Max Vega, street magicians, Tom Hughes, Glen Yost and storyteller, Vixi Jil Glenn. The strolling magic close-up team is headed up by Charlotte’s Chastain Criswell and includes three of magic’s brightest young stars, John Venus, Eric Stevens and Lizzy C.

As an added free attraction, the WOW team of master balloon artists, Mike Edwards, Carl Woody and Marcie McGrath, will transform the theatre lobby with an “Over the Rainbow” themed display, using over 10,000 colorful balloons.

The Weekend of Wonder is a veritable golden ticket into the world of pure imagination, perfect for children, families and everyone who loves magic. Your journey begins at the Asheville Community Theatre where all of the main events will take place. These include The All-Star Gala on Friday night, The Masters of Magic Gala on Saturday night, the One-Man Shows and Magic Lectures. The on-site Black Box Theatre, known as “35 Below” will host the Workshops. Show tickets are very reasonably priced, starting at just $10. From there you can venture out and about to be amazed, amused and inspired by magical street performers and balloon artists. Feel free to pop into any one of the official WOW venues, The Mellow Mushroom, Olive or Twist and Lex 18, to be mesmerized by astonishing close-up and stand-up.

The fantastic festivities begin with The Grand Opening Celebration, high noon on Friday at The Asheville Community Theatre. This is a free event, open to all, for introductions, questions, photos, autographs and surprises. The All-Star Street Show starts at 5pm Friday and later that night, the Meet the Stars party starts at 10:30pm.

Both of these special events are also free. The WOW Festival wraps up with the Closing Party at 8:30pm Sunday night.
