We gave you the official woolly worm winter prediction last weekend after the Banner Elk festival. Now we see that an Appalachian State University computer science geek has put out his own forecast.
It’s a doozy.
Dr. Ray Russell, who puts out Ray’s Fearless Forecast, says it’s going to be a wet winter, with temperatures about 1 degree below normal. Russell predicts a weak El Nino condition will bring wet weather to the Southeast, and a condition called a negative North Atlantic Oscillation will tend to push storms up the East Coast.
Russell predicts that North Carolina often will be on the dividing line between snow and rain. That’s nothing new. But Russell predicts 50 to 55 inches of snow this winter in Boone, 18 to 22 inches in Asheville, and 10 to 15 inches in the foothills. Those numbers are above normal.
Get your snow shovels and your sleds ready now, folks.

I was in a grocery store here, just north of Columbus, Ohio one Saturday afternoon when the Buckeyes were playing a night game. It look exactly like an Ashvegas grocery store when snow had been predicted. The place was packed! The only difference was that instead of bread, milk and toilet paper, people were buying chips, shrimp salad, beer and toilet paper.
It’s almost time for everyone to panic and create a mob scene at Ingles again. That’s a lot more fun than keeping a few canned goods on hand during the winter months. After all, it has been known to snow in Ashvegas.
Hurrah! My kids will be psyched.
hopefully there’ll be enough snow in our front yard this winter to build that anatomically-correct snowman that i’ve been threatening to build for several years. 🙂
