Also…in researching this 1965 speech, I ran across a reference to the speech having been filmed by Bob Orr of WSOC-TV in Charlotte. I hope to track down this video some day.

"Bob Orr filmed a speech by Martin Luther King in 1965.
The Republican gubernatorial candidate, then an 18-year-old stringer for WSOC-TV in Charlotte, used a 16mm handheld crank camera to film King at an appearance in Montreat on Aug. 21.
King was speaking at the Christian Action Conference at Anderson Auditorium."

All 4 parts of the historic 1965 Martin Luther King Speech at Montreat College can be found at

The total length of the speech was about 60 minutes and each segment on YouTube is about 15 minutes.

I'm very interested in hearing from any people who were there at that speech. I'd love to hear your perspectives…what your expectations were before the speech…..what impact the speech had on you….your friends…the community.

Thank you for sharing your memories. I was wondering how the speech affected the audience. It would be great if you added these comments to the YouTube page, so others could see them….

My mother was also there – standing in a doorway, she told us, where MLK walked right by her on his way in. She was also inspired by the speech.
