The Women’s March on Asheville, set for Saturday in conjunction with the Women’s March on Washington the same day, will begin in Pack Square Park with a series of speakers at 11 a.m. then move through downtown.
The Washington march, held the day after the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump, was organized in opposition to Trump’s administration. Organizers of the Asheville stress that their event is not anti-Trump, but rather pro-women’s rights and human rights.
Here’s more info on the Asheville march from the Facebook event page:
– Time and place: Saturday, January 21, rain or shine. Starts at 11 a.m. at Pack Square (Vance Monument), loops through downtown, ends at Vance Monument).
– March route: will be announced here on Wed Jan 18. It’s 0.7 mile and mostly flat. Stay tuned!
– Opening speakers: Mayor Esther Manheimer will open the march. Six other community leaders will make some remarks. Full list will be disclosed early next week. A couple of names: Jasmine Beach-Ferrara (Campaign for Southern Equality) and Iindia Pearson (Community Advocate).
– Parking: The march is in the heart of downtown. Covered and open lot parking will be available. More parking info here. Please arrive early.
– People with disabilities: We will have some March Ambassadors available to help those who need help. If you have a friend or family member who can help you, bring him or her!
– Children at the march: Children are welcome. Please remember that we are expecting a large crowd. Please keep an eye on your children. They should have a paper with a phone number to call in their pocket in case they get lost.
– We’ve been asked if men are welcome: Yes! This is an inclusive march. This is a time to stand together regardless of gender, age, and abilities. This is about making sure our human rights and constitutional rights are preserved. And this is a peaceful march.
– Dogs at the march? Dogs are allowed on a tight leash.
– Restrooms? Pack Square has public restrooms.
– March signs: You can bring your own. Or we have two poster-making gatherings this coming week: On Jan. 18 from 7PM to 9PM at The Burger Bar and on Jan. 20 from 8PM to 10PM at The BLOCK-off-Biltmore.

The lengths people are going to find something to criticize about last Saturday is absurd. Invoking the specter of your favorite boogie man George Soros is one of the funniest, though. What’s your implication, anyway? George Soros paid 3.7 million people to come out and protest?

…To understand the march better, I stayed up through the nights this week, studying the funding, politics and talking points of the some 403 groups that are “partners” of the march. Is this a non-partisan “Women’s March”?

Really? UniteWomen.org, another partner, features videos with the hashtags #ImWithHer, #DemsInPhily and #ThanksObama. Following the money, I pored through documents of billionaire George Soros and his Open Society philanthropy, because I wondered: What is the link between one of Hillary Clinton’s largest donors and the “Women’s March”?

I was impressed by how many distinguished organizations supported the Women’s March. No wonder it so completely overshadowed Trump’s anemic inauguration.
