WNCA hosts free Bearwallow Mountain Trail hike and Hickory Nut Gap Farm open house on Saturday

ASHEVILLE—Join the Western North Carolina Alliance on Saturday for a great free day of hiking the Bearwallow Mountain Trail, capped off by a seasonal open house at Hickory Nut Gap Farm.

The Bearwallow Mountain Trail is newly constructed by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and is a beautiful, strenuous, 2.0 mile round-trip hike that gains 537 feet of elevation. The long-distance views encompass the Asheville area, Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah and the Great Balsams Range.

Please bring water and snacks for the hike. Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome.

After the hike, participants will enjoy a special treat from the family-owned Hickory Nut Gap Farm. The business opens its farm and store doors four times a year for a tour and a seasonal open house—with samples!— from 1-5 p.m.

WNCA is also offering a holiday membership special for hike and tour attendees, at a discounted cost of $20. WNCA members get reduced prices on outings, including our nine-day French Broad River Paddle Trip in the summer (which usually sells out well in advance), as well as regular butterfly and wildflower hikes. Members also receive our monthly e-news and quarterly print newsletter and vote on important WNCA related matters, such as bylaws updates and board member selection.

Our members make it possible for WNCA to continue building on 31 years of protecting the region’s mountains, rivers and forests.

Registration is required for this free hike and open house by contacting WNCA Education and Outings Coordinator Isabelle Rios at [email protected] or by calling (828) 258-8737, ext. 201.

A carpool for the day’s events will leave from the Westgate Shopping Center at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 14). Those who prefer to meet at the trailhead can find directions at www.WNCA.org on the “Trips & Outings” page.
