2015 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, one of the most iconic, influential bands of the past half century. Fans are hoping for a reunion tour, and rumors are starting to heat up about what a reunion tour to mark the anniversary might look like.

A lot of folks are wondering if Asheville’s Warren Haynes might join the four core Grateful Dead members who are still alive and still performing: Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann formed the Grateful Dead in 1965 with Jerry Garcia. Mickey Hart joined in ’67, left the band for a couple of years in the early 1970s, then joined back up and remained until Garcia’s death.

There’s precedent for a reunion: the four core Grateful Dead members have come together and toured as The Other Ones and, more recently, as The Dead. There’s precedent for Haynes to take part – he joined in with The Dead appearances.

Haynes just held his annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, and Kreutzmann was a guest. Over the years, Weir and Lesh have also been guests at the Christmas Jam. This past year, Haynes played several dates of the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration, which includes Jerry Garcia classics such as “Morning Dew” Dark Star.”

Here’s an idea: what if Warren brought a Grateful Dead reunion to the 2015 Christmas Jam?

What does Haynes say about it all? Glide magazine asked Haynes for comment early this month:

Q: There’s been a lot of speculation about the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary and obviously if it happens people are wondering if you might step in. Do you think anything will happen and if so is there a chance you will be a part of this celebration?

A: I hope that something will happen. At this point there’s nothing that I can comment on.

I pray it’s Warren who fills that space. He’s BY FAR, the best fit for the Dead. I wouldn’t be too happy with JK even appearing on that tour. JK is a grate guitarist but he just can’t bring to the stage/shows what Warren beings. And that’s SOUL! JK just. Has no soul to his music & is to The Dead what Mark Wahlberg was to Steel Dragon in the movie Rock Star. JK stepped in $hi+ and should be grateful he had his 15 minutes of fame. No soul! Herring is anothe grate musician, No soul, no type of replacement for Mikey. Just sayin…..ROCK STAR is JK!

There won’t be a full tour, more likely a destination weekend of concerts

    well hell yes he will.

it’ll be great, the shows will sellout, lots of memories to be rekindled, the music will be awesome, but if there’s money to be made, he’ll certainly be there.

great guy but they’ve been milking the Brothers act for years, why not milk the Dead’s anniversary for a tour or two?

AS for Xmas Jam 2015, he needs to pull some serious favors and get some big guns in there next year.
