medicforce_2014I’d never heard of MedicForce USA before this. Sounds like a good group. Here’s the press release:

MedicForce USA will hold a “Beer for Gear” event at Catawba Brewing Company on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. Used outdoor gear, such as backpacks, kayaks, paddles or water bottles, can be donated in exchange for a beer coupon at the Brewery on the day of the event. The donated outdoor gear will be used to raise money for a community health clinic in rural Kenya.

MedicForce is a non-profit 501(c)(3), independent organization that utilizes first aid and medical professionals to provide free first aid training and care to remote communities throughout the world. The provision of ‘first aid for all’ (training) allows
individuals within a community to make informed decisions to prevent unnecessary death or further suffering from easily treatable medical conditions.

Training individuals (with no previous training) in remote communities to identify, treat and refer the sick is a building block towards sustainability, a Community Healthworker scheme MedicForce supports throughout the World.

Three years ago MedicForce and the British Charity Osiligi formed a partnership to build a medical clinic for a community of Maasai in Olepolos, Kenya. Osiligi’s objectives to help relieve poverty in the Maasai areas of Kenya closely matched the goals of MedicForce for sustainable healthcare and community education. For both organizations, there is not a focus on changing the culture of Kenya, but rather on helping Kenya and Africa help itself.

In November 2013, MedicForce traveled to Kenya and helped to choose an appropriate location for a clinic. A sponsor was found in the UK to build the clinic; MedicForce was then tasked with outfitting the clinic, employing staff and establishing a roster for visiting international healthworkers.

MedicForce will return to Kenya this November to complete its work on the clinic with an emphasis on health education, prevention, treatment, vaccination, and nutrition education, especially for mothers and children.

“MedicForce will only be successful in completing its tasks in Kenya,” says Jonothan Bryant, President and Founder of MedicForce, “through the generous support of fundraising events, such as the “Beer for Gear” drive, and through businesses and individuals who contribute their new and used gear.”

For more information about this event, contact Theresia at 828-318-3771. MedicForce will accept new or used gear, such as boats, backpacks, clothing, shoes, paddles or even water bottles, and will arrange to pick up your donation.
