Westall Chandley Lumber Co. in Woodfin has closed, while Terra Nostra furniture store in Asheville is planning to close.

Westall Chandley has been in business since 1905. No doubt the real estate market crash and recession had an impact. A timeline:

1905 J.M. Westall opened in Asheville NC. Offices were located downtown on Walnut St, and the Lumber yard was located near the railroad line.

1908 Brevard Lumber Company opened in Brevard NC by the Jenkins family. The first store was opened on the same site where it is currently located on King St.

1915 James Westall joins his father to run the “family business”. He would be joined by his son, Jack W Westall, Sr., several years later.

1936 Roy Chandley & Garland Johnson opened Johnson & Chandley Coal & Lumber Company. The original offices and yard were located on Thompson St where the current yard is located. The main business was originally coal and concrete.

1937 Roy Chandley brought his son Clay Chandley in to help run the business after he suffered a mild heart attack.

I don’t know how long Terra Nostra has been around. They have a good location at the corner of Walnut and Lexington in downtown Asheville. Details to come. Word is they will be an online only store.
