Andrew Scotchie, of Andrew Scotchie and The River Rats, recently dropped by to give me a little preview of a new single he’s excited about. It’s called Always With You, and in it, Scotchie pays tribute to his late father, who died when Scotchie was just 15.

“It’s really the most direct and point-blank story I could tell about what it was like to lose him at 15 years old, and how I tried to rise above that and move on while keeping him in my heart,” Scotchie says.

Scotchie has been working on the song for awhile, but says he did the first tracking of the tune around Thanksgiving of last year with Matt Williams, “a phenomenal fiddle player.” The song grew from there, says Scotchie. Singers Laura Blackley and Pam Williams added their vocals, and drummer Mike McCue rocked the percussion. Scotchie played a 6- and a 12-string guitar, harmonized and also played bass on the tune.

The idea was to create a song “that incorporates acoustic guitar and vocals into a band setting that doesn’t overpower the song,” he says. The song will be part of a new EP Scotchie says he’s preparing to release.

Scotchie and the River Rats, one of the hardest working musicians/bands on the local scene, recently played All Go West in West Asheville and Burning Can at Oskar Blues’ REEB Ranch in Brevard. The crew has more summer festivals to come, before playing their signature Barnaroo event the weekend of Sept. 30 at Frannie’s Farm in Leicester.
