trader_joes_opening_2013The Pumpkin Country Spice Granola Cereal is here. So is the Two Buck Chuck. And the traffic clusterf**k. You know all that can only add up to one thing: Trader Joe’s is fixin’ to open its first store on Merrimon Avenue in Asheville.

This is an open thread, Asheville. What do you make of it all? Do you have a shopping list? Are you planning to avoid Merrimon Avenue at all costs? What do you make of the escalation of the grocery wars in town? What are we missing about all this?

I have been to a few TJ in the past and i remember they had some awesome chips, always seemed to walkout with a bag. That being said it didn’t really seem to me to be a place i would do my shopping. Also i cant believe people are still talking about the traffic around there, you have no idea what bad traffic is. Im just saying!

I don’t think it’s so much the traffic, but the fact that Merrimon is so inadequate for all this growth this year. If you’re coming from downtown or 240, then everything’s on the left, and there isn’t a turn lane. Someone else earlier (maybe on FB) said that there isn’t even a left turn light at TJ’s. That’s where the nightmare will be, with traffic backed up for blocks.

The whole comment “AVL traffic is nothing like the bad traffic in X city” is a joke. Apples vs oranges. You are right X cities traffic suck and is much worse than asheville and has been for many years. Thats why we dont live there.
Many people in this city remember even 5-10 odd years ago when traffic was significantly less so
I myself remember when merrimon was much quieter 240 pretty much dead so in comparison the traffic is much worse leading people to gripe about it, rightly so.

Boy did i sound like a snot or what, sorry bout that! The thing i failed to realize is that people here are depended on there cars to get around. You see i came here from Boulder, CO. I think there are around like 300 miles of bike paths, i hardly ever had to drive. Also there bus system rocked. They ran like every half hour till midnight and they were always packed. Seems like no one here is interested in taking the bus.

Choice is a good thing. If you don’t want to shop there, don’t. I’m sure they’ll do just fine without you.

I used to shop there in S.F. and in Arizona, and they have some local, but doesn’t sooth my soul any longer. ON the Positive it creates a good company with Jobs that our economy needs! Awesome! Light people

I hope they open another one on Long Shoals. Merrimon seems as far as Greenville.

I’ll go once just to see what the hoopla is about, just like I went once to every other fad business that popped up.

I enjoyed Trader Joe’s near my grandmother’s place in Maryland. I’m looking forward to it, not for big shopping but a few things here and there. There is no such thing as 1-stop shopping for us.

I’m not a TJ fan. You never know what is behind their label, and they have no intention of telling you.
I want to shop local and know my grocer and my producers if at all possible.
