The esteemed Asheville Symphony Orchestra and a who’s-who of hot Asheville musicians—including Lizz Wright, Rising Appalachia and Steep Canyon Rangers—have joined forces in the studio for a new album celebrating the diversity of music emanating from the region. In an Asheville Citizen-Times interview with Jessica Tomasin of Echo Mountain Studios, Tomasin says the project has been eight months in the making. Tomasin teamed up with David Whitehill, executive director of the symphony, for Volume 1 of the Asheville Symphony Sessions, according to the story.

Eight different artists wrote songs, and several different music arrangers were called in put the music together. The arrangers include Michael Bearden, who was Michael Jackson’s musical director for the This Is It tour, and Van Dyke Parks, who worked on The Jungle Book animated film, according to the story. Local musicians on the project include Ben Hovey and Chris Rosser.
