The most irreverent of holiday shows arrives at the Magnetic Theatre again starting Nov. 30 with the staging of the annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular. It’s my favorite show of the year. This year, there’s a new director, a new cast member and more. Here’s the press release:

Last year’s Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular at the Magnetic Theatre saw the beloved and incomprehensible cousin Jerry get electrocuted, the introduction and training of Jimbo’s Latin lover/husband Joaquin, and the usual family squabbles, Santa tirade, and dance numbers.

Seeing what new debaucherous sketches the Bernstein writing team will come up with has become a tradition for many Ashevillians, and this year promises to be an exciting one for audiences. What surprises will the latest Spectacular bring? Head writer Lucia Del Vecchio (well known for such hits as MILF: The Musical and Off the Rails, as well as last year’s Bernstein) is at the helm as director for the first time, and the family is also welcoming a new cast member, Sarah Felmet.

“2017 has not been a year filled with laughs,” Del Vecchio said, “and that means we need the Bernsteins more than ever. I don’t think audiences will be disappointed–Baby Jesus is keeping his diaper flask close by.” The annual Spectacular, now in its eighth year, is written from scratch each year by the team of Del Vecchio, Jim Julien, Peter Lundblad, and Genevieve Packer. Newcomer Felmet joins cast mainstays Tracey Johnston-Crum (4-time Mountain Xpress Best of WNC winner, Local Actress), Darren Marshall, Erik Moellering and Glenn Reed.

The always R-rated Bernsteins and a host of other characters from the Christmas canon come together to bring The 34th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular to the River Arts District. This favorite Christmas production will return November 30th through December 22nd at Magnetic 375, with fourteen chances to party with the family. As with past years, the entire run of The 34th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular is expected to sell out in advance.
