Ashvegas: The City You Love. The News You Want. Some of what’s going around:

-The 2016 Business Walk is set for Wednesday, Jan. 27. Wolunteers will visit local businesses throughout the Asheville area to gauge the community’s business environment, according to a press release. More:

The 2016 Business Walk is organized by the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Asheville Downtown Association, Biltmore Park Partners, Historic Biltmore Village, River Arts District and West Asheville Business Association.

“Businesses are one of the most important parts of the community,” said Kit Cramer, president and CEO of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. “We want to talk face-to-face to business owners and managers and find out their needs and concerns and see how we might assist.”

First conducted in 2013, this year’s Business Walk asks businesses what would make their business more successful and what changes would improve the local business environment. The Chamber and its strategic partners will use the answers to inform economic development and public policy efforts aimed at building community through business.

Businesses that are not visited as part of the walk are invited to participate online at www.ashevillechamber.org/businesswalk. The survey is open to all Asheville area businesses.

Spellbound Children’s Bookshop is moving to Merrimon Square shopping center at 640 Merrimon Ave., home of The Hop Ice Cream Shop. It’s a great local bookshop, and it’s worth supporting.

-Merrimon Square is also getting another tenant, Favilla’s pizza shop, according to city building permits that have been pulled. The location is the former Circle in the Square shop.

-Speaking of pizza, loyal reader Mike asks the following – anyone know what’s up with the following:

Hey there – avid reader of the site and wanted to ask you a question. We live out in Enka-Candler and it looks like a new Pizza place is taking over the old Franks Roman Pizza spot. I think it was 4 Brothers Pizzeria or something? Know/heard anything about it? Pizza is seriously lacking out our way.

-The YWCA of Asheville launched a new branding and awareness campaign. Here’s the YWCA video ad. More:

Today, YWCA of Asheville, alongside YWCA USA and more than 220 other YWCAs around the country, launched a brand awareness campaign meant to reintroduce YWCA, share its life-changing work, and invite people to join us on our mission to empower women and eliminate racism.

-Ben Lovett, a musician and music composer in Asheville, wrote the music score for a new independent film that’s out now called Synchronicity. “The retro-themed, time travel noir is my first entirely electronic film score, created with vintage analog synthesizers to re-capture the classic vibe of early 80’s sci-fi,” according to a press release.

-Geeks Who Drink Pub Quizzes is partnering with The One Stop at Asheville Music Hall to bring the nation’s most popular pub quiz to the area starting on Wednesday, Jan. 27, according to a press release. More:

This weekly pub quiz will run for 2 hours and feature 8 rounds of audio, visual and live read questions. Geeks Who Drink is the nation’s largest independently owned trivia company, inspired a television show on SyFy, hosted by Zachary Levi, and hosts the nation’s largest trivia event, Geek Bowl, every February.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the fourth location in four years for Spellbound . . . I’m genuinely impressed that they’ve managed to stay alive through all of these moves.
