martin_nesbitt_2014 A group of friends and supporters rallied yesterday alongside Interstate 40 as an ambulance whisked Sen. Martin Nesbitt home, according to various media reports. Nesbitt is very sick and sources say he’s receiving hospice care. Nesbitt, who filed for re-election recently, stepped down from his position as Senate minority leader because of his illness. The nature of illness has not been made public. Nesbitt has represented Asheville-area residents for three decades in the state House and Senate.

RIP Sen. Nesbitt. An immense presence, and both a model and a hard act to follow in public service. Such a loss.
