short_street_cakes_asheville_2016Congratulations to Jodi, Olga and Tomas! Here’s the full press release:

Short Street Cakes, Asheville’s all-natural, from-scratch, Southern-style cake bakery, will celebrate their 7th anniversary and the purchase of the business by long-term employee and Cake Lady Olga Perez with a Mardi Gras party on February 9th.

Olga Perez, the current Production Manager and long-term employee of Short Street Cakes, and her husband, Tomas Aguilar, are purchasing Short Street Cakes from founder and original owner, Jodi Rhoden. Mountain Bizworks approved the loan today. The transfer of ownership will take place on February 9th, Mardi Gras, also the 7th anniversary of the grand opening of the Haywood Road retail location. The community is invited to celebrate the purchase with Olga and Jodi and their families at our 7th annual Mardi Gras party, from 5-8 at 225 Haywood Road, with a raffle, free Mardi Gras beads, a DJ Abu Dissaray and live music by Vince Junior Band.

Jodi and Olga met when Olga Perez was interviewed and featured in Jodi’s 2011 book Cake Ladies, for her flan, tres leches cake, and other Mexican pastries she was offering from her home in the Emma community. Olga has worked at Short Street Cakes for 3 years, where she has taken on a leadership role. Jodi and Olga have become dear friends. Olga and Tomas and their three daughters plan to keep the name, as well as maintaining and growing Short Street’s successful wedding, birthday, and cupcake business. They plan to eventually expand into more cafe offerings at the current location.

Jodi Rhoden, who started the business out of her home 10 years ago, will continue to work in the business for a while to support the transition. She ultimately plans to focus on her work as a writer, as well as continuing to work with entrepreneurs through Birds Eye Business Planning and Mountain Bizworks. The whole Cake Shop family is very excited about this wonderful news!
