GreenManThe folks over at the Asheville Ale Trail are declaring a new name for Asheville’s South Slope– the area generally bounded by Ashland Avenue, Biltmore Avenue and Buxton and Coxe. From Asheville Ale Trail on FB, emphasis ours:

It’s official-we’re renaming Asheville’s “South Slope” area to the Asheville Brewery District. Why, you ask? Let’s look at the facts: Asheville staple and old guard Green Man Brewing, newcomers Twin Leaf Brewery and Burial Beer Co. opening soon, news of a Hi-Wire Brewing taking over the old Craggie space, Wicked Weed Brewing and Asheville Brewing Company all within walking distance of each other, and close to Asheville Tourists Baseball Club’s McCormick Field.

That’s a full flight of Breweries! Buy summer this should all be cranking!

It’s called Collier Glen in old city plans (1970s-early 1980s). However, I’ve most often heard it called the South Slope.

It’s only been two months since “South Slope” entered the general lexicon, and you’re already asking if it’s time for a change?

    Wanker.

I’ve heard that particular part of town referred to as South Slop for a few years now. I can distinctly recall it in reference to the old Zona Lofts project that was due to go up before the economy shit the bed.

I like Buxton Hill because it actually relates to the area. On the other hand, South Slope is descriptive and reminds us of Grove leveling the hill and pushing all the dirt down the ravine to make the area.

Re Sean’s story: Same thing happened to me when a newcomer mentioned Riceville and I said “where?” He explained and I said, “you mean Oteen.” He didn’t like that name but I guess it sounded classier to the real estate people.

I can’t help but be reminded of a conversation that devolved into an argument I had with a gentleman several years ago. As an Asheville native, and he a newcomer, I was asked about my opinion of living in “Sayles Village”. I told him that I had never heard of such a place. He said “You know….the cluster of mill homes in and around Fairview Road and Wood Avenue”.

I told him that his realtor saw him coming a mile away. “That’s Oakley, dude.” The discussion ended with him storming away, angry at my ignorance.

How about we call it whatever we want? With the exception of “SoHi” or “SoSlo”, or any other version of a hip abbreviation. That’s just freakin’ lame.

Heck, no! I still haven’t gotten over the Smoky Park Bridge name change-no offense to Jeff Bowen. And yes, the name is premature, with only one brewery so far!

In my opinion (since you asked), “brewery district” isn’t a name, it’s a description. Using it as a name is boring and mundane, unworthy of these establishments and creative craft brewing. Any city or town could have a “Brewery District”. South Slope is also a description, but at least it is a little more unique to downtown Asheville. Instead, continue to call it South Slope or SoSlo as it already is, but the breweries could describe their location as the South Slope Brewery District, combining the two instead of renaming.

Either that or come up with something more unique that reflects Asheville’s craft beer scene, not Anywown, USAs craft beer scene.

In addition, there are currently only three established breweries (if you include ABC which is only their restaurant/pub) in this area, and one, though great so far, is brand new. That’s hardly a “brewery district” worthy of marketing separately from all of downtown. Craggie failed and Hi-Wire is not yet established. Neither are Burial and Twin Leaf. Let’s not put the cart before the horse. Let those establishments get up and running and see if they will last. THEN you’ve got a district worth naming.

Chicken and Waffles coming to South Slope? At today’s Asheville Downtown Association State of Downtown Luncheon president Adrian Vassallo made a passing mention of a chicken and waffle place coming to the South Slope area. Anyone know more? When? Where?

RSP, I’ll have to ask Adrian what he was referring to. The new restaurant coming to the South Slope is called Buxton Hill, and will be on Banks Avenue. I thought their focus was going to be barbecue, but they could be doing chicken and waffles.

RSP, Tolliver’s Crossing is also moving to the South Slope. I don’t know if they serve chicken and waffles…

Adrian mentioned Buxton and Tollivers as well as Burial, Green Man, and the APB expansion. He called out the chicken and waffles separately, though, so it seemed like it would be its own place.

If it’s going to be renamed, I prefer “Brewerytown.” We don’t have a really good “town” neighborhood name around here.
