terry_van_duyn_2014Terry Van Duyn, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for the District 3 seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners in 2012, has announced her candidacy for the N.C. Senate seat left open by the recent death of Sen. Martin Nesbitt.

Van Duyn said she was a “progressive candidate” who is especially passionate about President Barack Obama’s new health care law. Van Duyn is a health care “navigator” trained to help people better understand Affordable Care Act and get signed up for health care under the new law. Health care is an economic issue, said Van Duyn, adding that she has experience working with elected officials on the issue.

Van Duyn is former programmer and systems analyst and a community volunteer. In her run for commissioner, Van Duyn cited her community work, including work with Mission Children’s Hospital, Meals on Wheels and Pisgah Legal Services.

Jon Ostendorff of the Asheville Citizen-Times has reported that former Superior Court Judge Dennis Winner and Buncombe County Commissioner Holly Jones are also interested in the open District 49 Senate seat. The district covers most of Buncombe County.

Buncombe County Democratic Party officials have announced that they plan to meet April 3 to pick a person to serve out Nesbitt’s unexpired term.
