Buncombe Dems will meet April 3 to pick person to fill N.C. Sen. Martin Nesbitt’s seat

buncombe_dems_2014Below, you’ll find a press release regarding the process that Buncombe Democrats will use to pick a person to fill the N.C. Senate seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Martin Nesbitt:

On Thursday April 3rd the Buncombe County Democratic Executive Committee shall hold a meeting to fill the Senate vacancy for Senate District 49. Registration begins at 5 pm and the meeting will be gaveled to order promptly at 6 pm, all at the new wing of the Buncombe County Courthouse, ground floor 1A. A meeting for the purposes of filling a candidate on the November ballot will occur at a later date to be determined.

Eligible Executive Committee Participants: Only the members of the Executive Committee who reside in Senate District 49 will be allowed to vote in the special election. Voting members will includes all precinct chairs and vice chairs, SEC members, auxiliary presidents as well as Democratic elected officials who reside in Senate District 49. A quorum of forty percent of the eligible members of the Executive Committee is required to conduct business.

For eligibility to vote at the April 3rd meeting, a precinct located within Senate District 49 must hold an appropriately advertised meeting and elect a chair and vice chair. Precinct certification forms must be submitted to Chair Kathy Sinclair No Later Than Thursday, March 20th.

A list of eligible Executive Committee members will be emailed and posted here as soon as such a list can be compiled. However, the list may be amended after March 20th to reflect newly certified precincts. Amendments to the list will be distributed similarly to the original list.

Candidate Eligibility: Eligible candidates must 1) be a registered voter, 2) reside in Senate District 49, 3) be registered a Democrat. Active Democrats in good standing who exemplify the values of the Democratic Party and the legacy Senator Nesbitt are encouraged to become candidates.

The Standing Rules for this Executive Committee Meeting as well as the Agenda for the meeting will be posted on the website no later than Friday March 21st. This will include, but not limited to, the process for proxy votes, nominations, voting, time limits for speeches, and how ballots will be counted.

Please make plans for attendance. Food for dinner will be provided.
