Hello Asheville!

On Tuesday December 15th, Joe and I recorded yet another great episodes of AVL Food Fans! YAY!

We had 3 very kick-ass women on the show with us: Kelly Vormelker and Sam Pennington from Velvet & Lace at Buxton Hall Barbecue came on to talk to us about their FEM Recognition, Witch-craft-cocktail events, and other fun stuff, and we were also joined by Lucy Murphy from the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association, who delivered the “AIR Drop!”

Please click below to listen me and Joe and Kelly and Sam and Lucy as we talk about Asheville, food, lunch, women, cocktails, witchcraft, FEM recognition, and… Stevie Nicks???

Lucy has agreed to be do her AIR Drop segment with us on a regular basis! This time she talked about the AIR Passport, which is available at the Asheville Independent Restaurants web site.

Joe and I also deliver the Food News this week, leading with the story of troubled King James Pub closing its doors, to possibly rebrand as a Dressler’s. I give the Dressler’s on-line menu a yawn.

After the news, Joe and I both talk about the Stoobie awards, that I’ve been posting on Ashvegas.com and Joe surprised me by comparing my writing to Eli Weisel and John Irving. He’s obviously insane, but I’ll take the compliment!

After the our guests, Joe and I talk about lunch, specifically, how to get people into your venue to eat lunch! Joe and I both offer some bullet-pointed insights based on years of successfully serving (Joe) and eating (me) lunch in restaurants. We both also have considerable experience in promoting stuff. Joe and I always hope to amuse and inform our listeners, in that order.

Please tune in and listen today if you have time: http://www.spreaker.com/show/avl-food-fans

We’ve had over 6,000 listens so far, thanks to you guys! You’ve made AVL Food Fans the most popular podcast ever… about food… in Asheville. Yay!

VELVET & LACE – FEM recognition – a celebration of the female presence in Asheville’s bar scene

What: VELVET & LACE is a women-centric event that focuses on celebrating the talented females within Asheville’s bar scene. Kelly Vormelker and Sam Pennington of Buxton Hall have teamed up to create a night of females, fire, music and cocktails, channeled through the lens of The Craft and Stevie Nicks. Think witchcraft, white doves and black magic. Mary Kelley aka “DJ Night Nurse” spins dark classics, Rose Hecht brings photobooth fun. Food is served, maybe Elliott Moss lets us BBQ a GOAT?

VELVET & LACE takes place once a month, over the course of six months, always on the first Thursday of the month. Each month, VELVET & LACE hosts a different female bartender currently working in Asheville. The decidedly dark theme showcases craft cocktails made by these lovely ladies, with a focus on smoke, fire, herbs, elixirs and tinctures. Vormelker and Pennington are finalizing the lineup of badass babes. Expect heavy hitters from Buxton Hall and MG Road to show up such as, Leah Peacock, Sarah Cousler, Jennifer Moss, Erin Hawley and Mary Kelley as well as girls from hot Asheville cocktail spots. All girls and BOYS are strongly encouraged to attend.

Additionally, 10% of sales are donated to Our VOICE. Our VOICE serves all individuals in Buncombe County affected by sexual assault and abuse, through counseling, advocacy and education.

When: VELVET & LACE takes place the first Thursday of every month at the main bar of Buxton Hall Barbeque. Six events are planned – one event each month. Final confirmation from the guest bartenders is pending. Each event runs from 10 pm to 1 am.

DEC 3 Event one: Sam Pennington & Kelly Vormelker (KICK OFF PARTY)

JAN 7 Event two: Katey Ryder (Sovereign Remedies)

FEB 3 Event three: Shannon McGaughey (Bull & Beggar)

MAR 3 Event four: Erin Hawley (MG ROAD)

APR 7 Event five: Andrea Seng (Imperial Life)

MAY 5 Event six: Kristen Oxtoby (Burial Beer) & Kelly Vormelker & Sam Pennington – This is also Cinco De Mayo, so expect A BIG PARTY.

Where: Buxton Hall Barbeque 32 Banks Avenue, South Slope of Asheville

Takeaways: This event was inspired by the simple fact that female bartenders are outnumbered in this town. While Asheville is a very accepting place, bartending is still largely seen as a man’s job. Our goal is to overlook any negative stigma around this truth and simply celebrate the badass women working within Asheville’s bar scene. Each event will be sexy, mysterious and empowering. In addition, we are donating 10% of sales to Our VOICE. Our VOICE serves all individuals in Buncombe County affected by sexual assault and abuse, through counseling, advocacy and education.
