Here’s a quick look at what the construction sites for the new Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter stores on Merrimon Avenue. Both stores should be opening later this year. The two sites are adjacent to one another at the intersection of Merrimon and Chestnut.

There’s on ongoing debate about what else might locate on the Harris Teeter site. Asheville City Council debated the topic on Tuesday. Word on the street is that a Chick-fil-A and a Chipotle want to put restaurants on the site.

Do you have any idea what month Trader Joe’s will open? Is it still looking like it will happen this year?

Thank you, Jason. I know they have knocked down the old buildings- have they broken ground? Does it look like the fall or winter before they open? I’m sorry for the questions- I actually work for a Trader Joe’s in Illinois and am hoping to transfer. But they are not very forthcoming with a date range of when and I’m trying to figure out when I might have to put my house up. Thought maybe the construction people down there might have a better idea.

Again, thank you for any information.

JanClare, I’ll ask for an update. You’re correct – the old buildings have been knocked down but it still looks like the site is being prepared for new construction.

Jason, we just drove by there yesterday, and believed that we saw a sign indicating there might be construction for a college extension location; I think it said Wilson College (could not read it very well). Can you confirm this? Having another college accessible to downtown would be great. Thanks.

FYI, the pink house in the background of the last picture is for sale, though quite a fixer-upper:
