Here’s a sneak peek at Asheville’s newest craft brewery, One World Brewing, which is just days away from opening to the public. (Beer will actually be flowing later this week for a couple of private parties.) The brewery is located in the basement of the building that’s home to Farm Burger along Patton Avenue, just off the city’s downtown main square. I love the feel and decor of this place: speakeasy style, with a dart board and schulbach tables; fermentation rooms lit with green and purple lights; a big table made from the floor of the building’s original elevator; and some other cool touches. Robert Todd of Red House Architecture was the architect on the job – he and his crew have been doing some amazing work around town. And for more background, reader Ashvegas contributor Cliff Mori’s Brew-ED Beer News description of One World Brewing here.

This is a very cool space. The tables are natural, rustic works of art. One World had 4 kinds of IPAs on tap when I was there (my go-to beer species) and they were all good.

There is still no signage outside which makes it completely invisible, even if you’re in the right alley.

They had on some eclectic, chill music when I was there, played at exactly the right level. This would be an awesome conversation place with a small group of friends.

My only complaint was I didn’t get phone or text service while I was underground there (but I use AT&T– which is like 2 cans & a string.)

I thought the beers were really good – Inner Thigh IPA being my fave, I also can get behind the super-smooth coconut porter… Great new spot for a relaxed brew or two!

Visited OWB this weekend. The beer was just okay. I had a flight of six different styles and nothing really jumped out. Not sure why they think they need to have twelve different beers on when they first start. Any place is better off just making four or five really good brews and building from there.

That said, there is some nice potential in the space. It has a cool tucked-away, literally underground Asheville, vibe. I look forward to returning to see if the most important part of any brewery, the beer, has made a change for the better.

Yeah, there’s no need to produce one of every major style if half of them are going to be mediocre. The ESB I tried was syrupy and not great at all, and they’d have been better off leaving it off their list.

      Decent space, though.

I don’t know how the beer will rank, but this place is clearly #1 is pre-opening stories.

It has to be said: they spent all that money on decor and renovation but opted for plastic fermenters?!?!?

      Nice catch.

In fairness though, it doesn’t look like they spend that much money on decor either.

Do you ever have anything positive to say on here?

I think your question probably says more about your own bias than it does about my statement.

My statement is about as neutral as it gets. Taken at face value there’s no way that it can be construed as a negative comment unless you think spending more money is “positive” and less money is “negative.” And if that’s the case, like I said, that’s your bias creeping through.

To me, yes, it looks like they took the thrifty route with the decor. With the turnover for similar establishments in the current Asheville market, that’s probably a wise decision.

They used Robert Todd for architectural duties, I’d say they spent a fair amount.

How do you get to their entrance? Does the alley come off of Lexington or off of Patton?

Off of Patton in the alley between Farm Burger and Salsa’s
