Chestnut, Asheville’s newest restaurant, opened two days and I have to say, I like what they’ve done with the place. A complete renovation hopefully dispelled all the bad juju that had collected in the location, which has housed a series of restaurants, going back to the Blue Rooster in the mid 1990s (there was also Tibbideaux Jones, Golden Horn and Ed Boudreax’s; am I missing anything?).

The place is beautifully appointed, and has a compelling menu to match. They could stand to spice things up a bit, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Here’s what Mackensy Lunsford of Asheville Scene says:

Chef Matt Tracy, along with his sous chef and Corner Kitchen chef Josh Weeks, have put together a menu of unfettered, creative American cuisine. The food will be seasonally focused, with smaller portions available, sized somewhere between tapas and entrees. Ask Tracy what he expects to lend most to the menu, and his answer is succinct: “Simplicity.”

“Joe and I worked together, so we come from the same school of thought,” he said.

According to Scully: “It will be as good as we can make it,” he said. “It’s a cool setting and a beautiful building inside.”

Here’s a look:

Ash, you missed the Raven as most did because, at one time, it was the shortest-lived restaurant in Asheville.

      Hey Craggy or anybody,

Do you know what ever happened to the chef behind The Raven – I LOVED that place.
