Music will fill the air as Make Music Day, the world’s largest annual music event, launches its first festival in Asheville with a wild and wonderful mix of music‐making.
On June 20 & 21, 2015, a consortium of community volunteers will launch Make Music Asheville, an all‐day, open‐access, free and non‐profit music festival designed to celebrate local talent and inspire others to play music in a variety of neighborhoods across the greater Asheville region.
Make Music Day began in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, and has since spread to over 700 cities in 120 countries. Every city has a unique musical ecology and, in turn, offers a different perspective on this worldwide celebration. Make Music Asheville’s primary goals are to provide an equal platform for musicians of all skill levels, interests and walks of life and to inspire the next generation of musicians.
A collection of performances in intimate spaces including a school, historic theater, and retail store will highlight the social function of music – bridging the gaps between the formal and informal.
This event is an all‐ages, all‐inclusive celebration of music ‐ everyone is welcome and encouraged to join the celebration!

It wouldn’t bother me so much if festivals wouldn’t state things like, “primary goals are to provide an equal platform for musicians of all skill levels, interests and walks of life and to inspire the next generation of musicians”, and/or claim to be inclusive of a wide variety of genres, and then never book metal bands. I’m not saying book average bands, but there are a few local ones that have musicians with skills on par with highly trained classical and jazz musicians. believe it or not. Some of them actually ARE also highly trained jazz/classical musicians with performance degrees.
I really hope to see some good technical metal at this festival! It is such a shame that there are some HIGHLY talented/skilled local metal bands with incredible songs who NEVER get on any local festival. ever.. due to the stigma against metal. Some of these bands practice 5 days a week – 3-4 hours a day.
