New Earth Muziq, a “sustainable event production and management” company with ties to the New Mountain Asheville music venue, announced today that it had purchased Asheville Music Hall, another local music venue.
Asheville Music Hall co-owner Katherine “KP” Powell announced earlier this year that she was looking to sell the hall. It’s not surprising that Adrian Zelski, the connection between New Earth Muziq and New Mountain Asheville, is stepping up to buy out Asheville Music Hall – I’m unclear on the details, but past members of the Asheville Music Hall team are now members of the New Mountain team.
The press release says there are no changes planned for the One Stop music venue and Mojo Kitchen, which are part of the Asheville Music Hall but operate on the College Street-facing floor beneath the Patton Avenue-facing music hall.
There’s no mention in the press release of whether the music showcased at Asheville Music Hall might change. Sam Katz, an Asheville Music Hall investor who also promotes music acts, said Thursday night that there are no changes planned for the music hall, either.

New Earth MUZIQ is excited to announce the recent acquisition of Asheville Music Hall. To celebrate the grand opening of New Mountain Asheville’s new sister venue, New Earth MUZIQ will host a free “Time Machine Party” with Ben Lovett at Asheville Music Hall on Saturday, January 10th.
Since opening in October 2010, Asheville Music Hall has presented a diverse array of talent including Ghostface Killah, George Porter Jr., Gift of Gab, Mark Farina, Emancipator, Blockhead, Break Science, Mobb Deep, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Mike Dillon Band, Orgone and Greensky Bluegrass. The 360-capacity venue has served an important role in the expansion of Asheville’s music scene and has played an integral part in MoogFest, Warren Haynes Christmas Jam By Day, Brown Bag Songwriting Competition and the Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit. The One Stop, located directly downstairs, offers live music six nights per week and houses the newly re-vamped Mojo Kitchen restaurant.
New Earth MUZIQ has confirmed that The One Stop nightly music schedule and weekly bluegrass brunch installment will not change. Mojo Kitchen will also continue to serve up its renowned delectables. The New Earth MUZIQ team – including local resident Adrian Zelski, co-manager of Asheville’s own world-folk-soul group Rising Appalachia and partner in New Mountain Asheville and Athens, GA’s New Earth Music Hall – is excited to expand on the brand that former owner Katherine “KP” Powell has created with Asheville Music Hall. The team is pleased to announce that KP will stay on at the venue as a talent buyer for future events. New owners Adrian Zelski and the New Earth MUZIQ team aim to make Asheville Music Hall “Asheville’s Funkiest Club.”

Well, I just got home from work, but I have to say it:
I have seen some really great shows at Asheville Music Hall, and most of them were Hip-Hop and dance/RPM. Under-represented sounds, sometimes with ensembles, but always attributed to the equipment available to the person at the board.
For example:
Everyone told me to be disappointed by the live show of one of my favs–Del. With promises of a 12-person band, I had to go, and it was a highlight of my life. Did you watch the preamble of, like, 4 openers? Did you see how they set it up and/or tested the levels? Adrian Younge is on fire, and the heat is not easily tamed. In my opinion and experience: Only at AMH would the room give way to that mix, or maybe only these producers are willing to listen to the wealth of information from our venues’ staff. It’s possible it was a head-butting war of egos, but with this being the only example I’m giving, I doubt it. The sound is good in that room.
I hope every venue in town will make way for the Black, African-American, African, Spanish-language, RPM, and LGBTQ arts in our town. I know we can make it sound good too, and AMH was one of the places that was consistently doing it right.

I wish you luck and sincerely hope you are able to figure out how to improve the marketing and promo. Last year I saw 2 amazing performances at NM that had low attendance, presumably due to poor outreach: Big Freedia and Crystal Bright. Both of these artists are huge talents but not widely known. Their unique sounds should have been explained and evangelized to a much wider audience (to the benefit of all involved).
Funny. Two venues that can’t keep their shit together. Will two negatives equal a positve? Are there enough hippies to fill both places? Must be nice to have parents money to play with.

AMH owner Sam Katz was ranting on FB about how New Mountain was stealing their business. How NM has increased competition… Cry me a river. Did you not move here and cut into the music biz. AMH increased competition when they opened. Other clubs were affected. That’s how it is. You don’t own Asheville, but you act like it. Now we’ll see if New Earth MUSIQ can manage to keep 2 venues open.
Yes, it’s true, we’ve joined forces, SAME TEAM, a Co-Op-etition if you will. There’s been some bumps in the road, naturally, along the journey to get to this point, but I’m happy w/how it’s turned out and the team at AMH is super psyched for this union. Watch out for monster things to happen this year.
