New 12-story Mission Hospital tower gets early approval from Asheville city officials

Construction of a new 12-story, 681,000-square-foot Mission Hospital tower met with early approval from Asheville city officials Monday afternoon. Representatives from various city departments met with the hospital’s construction team to look over preliminary plans. City officials offered suggestions here and there, but moved it along in the city’s regulatory process.

The construction site is 8 acres of a 30-acre site that is roughly bounded by Biltmore Avenue, Victoria Road and Hospital Drive. Some existing buildings and parking areas have, or will be, demolished to make way for the new tower, which will be home to the hospital’s emergency department.

There will 10-stories built above ground. The site will provide several new points of access for the public, and it will significantly reconfigure access to the emergency department: the new main entrance to the Mission Hospital emergency department will be off Victoria Drive when all the work is finished.
