An independently organized, local-focused festival of music, art, food, dance, creativity and Asheville fun, LAAFF is a party for the people. Costumes and family-friendly freakiness encouraged.

The Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF), the annual freaky street fair some call Bele Chere for locals, is this weekend. Sponsor Arts2People speaks about this year’s LAAFF:

Pre-LAAFF-A-Thon, Saturday night,  September 1st, a local venue crawl, from 5pm to 2am with an amazing innaugural opening set of performances on the new Rankin Stage sponsored in part by Echo Mountain Studios & IAMAVL.

LAAFF, all day Sunday, September 2nd, from 11am to 9pm with an expanded footprint to include 3 blocks of N. Lexington and Rankin St., 4 stages, all new Interative Arts, Kids, and Big Kid Games.

Representing the Flava we will have all of our favorite food vendors, a Food Truck Court, and shaded picnic spots.

In an effort to start dialogue about the revitalization of Urban Spaces, Arts2People has partnered with O.P.E.N., (Outreach Projects Engaging Neigborhoods) to create and feature at LAAFF, a Parklet in front of Izzy’s and Hip Replacements (finally, a place to sit, outside, at Izzy’s!)

This year’s line-up  just goes to show what an amazing music scene we have in Asheville. In honor of this fact, and in honor of the last 10 years that musicians have given LAAFF all they’ve got for nought, we will be paying musicians for the first time ever!!!!

How you ask? This year, the Pre-LAAFF-A-Thon will be a ticketed event. For $25, get a wristband for 8 different venues. From 5pm- 2 am local artists will perform at various venues throughout Downtown Asheville. Proceeds from ticket sales go to pay performers.

More about LAAFF from its Facebook page:

LAAFF has become the showcase event for all types of talent on multiple stages and performance areas including rock and roll, indie pop, funk, folk, ragtime, reggae, world beats, singer-songwriters, bluegrass, old time, African drummers, clowns, magicians, contortionists, belly dancers, modern dancers, vaudeville actors, hula hoopers, and more. LAAFF has grown over the years to become known as Asheville’s largest independent street festival with upwards of 20,000 in attendance.

LAAFF is an experience the whole family can get into. Kids will love making art, dancing, getting their faces painted and having fun all day long. Kids are also in on the act showing off their breakdancing, parading, and making music. The big “kids” will enjoy the ever popular bicycle jousting, local brews provided by the Asheville Brewers Alliance, an eclectic culinary and artistic experience, as well as the new big people game: Big Wheels for Big Kids. There will be lots of fun new vendors as well as old favorites with a ton of variety.

This year, the usual free festival is Sunday, and a new $20/$25 pub crawl is Saturday.

Saturday pub crawl music lineup below. Get into one venue for $10, do the whole crawl for $25 ($20 if you buy your ticket in the pre-sale). Shows on the Rankin Ave. outdoor stage are FREE:

Please note that all bands scheduled for the French Broad Chocolate Lounge have been moved to Scully’s.

The music lineup is great: River Whyless, The Krektones, The Broadcast, Pierce Edens, local rock star Woody Wood, hot new band Antique Firearms… Here’s the Sunday music schedule (all events are free):

We want to remind people that Saturday evening, the Rankin Avenue Stage is FREE and not part of the $20/$25 dollar ticket! Also, if people can’t make it, they can watch on our website http://www.iamavl.com. Thanks!
