You might say Jane Kramer was on a search for songs.

Kramer crisscrossed Scotland last month to soak up its rich cultural history and rugged beauty to seek more than a little inspiration. She spent time in tiny pubs listening to weekly jams of traditional Scottish music. She wrote a song while sitting in a 1,200-year-old Druid burial ground. And she befriended a traditional kilt-maker who lent her a century-old collection of classic Robert Burns songs.

Now she’s back home in Asheville with a July 15 show at The Altamont Theatre, and she’s ready to share some of what she found. Energized by her travels, Kramer will bring a wealth of songs old and new, as well as a few stories, inspired by her time spent in Scotland.

“I’ve long been fascinated with the direct connection and audible similarities between the traditional music of the British Isles and our Appalachian mountains,” Kramer says. “I was able to see and hear first-hand what these connections and similarities were.”

Kramer joined Scottish musicians in live performances, radio appearances and recording studios. Most importantly to her, she worked intensively on honing her songwriting craft. She attended an immersive, week-long workshop at Kincardine Castle led by her songwriting mentor, Mary Gauthier. (The two even passed up an opportunity to see the Queen of England to spend an afternoon collaborating on a song.)

Those influences will be on display during the July 15 performance, which will showcase a band full of Asheville’s most accomplished and well-known musicians. Kramer will be backed by Chris Rosser, Eliot Wadopian and River Guerguerian, (the virtuoso trio that comprises Free Planet Radio), as well as Billy Cardine (Biscuit Burners, Acoustic Syndicate, etc.)

After releasing her second solo album, “Carnival of Hopes,” in February 2016, Kramer has been playing listening rooms and festivals around the country to support it. Recognized as “an artist on the rise” by the acclaimed Gauthier, she’s performed with such well-known artists as Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Appalachian troubadour Malcolm Holcombe and star Joan Osborne.

Kramer moved from her hometown of Philadelphia, Penn., to Asheville in 1999. She honed her singing and songwriting craft at Warren Wilson College, then performed with the popular Asheville-based all-female trio, The Barrel House Mamas, for seven years.

The upcoming show is another chance for Kramer to do what she loves – bring people together through music.

“With this performance at The Altamont, I’ll bring listeners on the journey with me through the songs and stories that I share,” Kramer says. “I hope that my audience will leave the show having seen firsthand how song closes the gaps between us and can make the world feel smaller and more accessible in such a comforting way.”
