More from the new Asheville Scene: Tony Kiss shares the story of the reinvented Goombay!, with LAAFF organizers stepping in and bringing a professional event-management company, Powerhaus Productions, to revitalize the annual festival.

Look for a block party, DJs, a dance contest, a parade, live music, an after-party, and Arrested Development live at the Peel on Sunday as a Goombay fundraiser:

This year, Goombay will focus most of its energy on The Block, particularly the corner of Market and Eagle streets. Friday night’s activities, from 6-9 p.m., will, accordingly, be more of a “block party,” with music, food and a site setup. DJ Super See from community radio station WRES-LP/100.7 FM will play. An all-ages dance contest will happen in those same hours inside the YMI auditorium.
